Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife.

Total is presented as furnished. Summation of individual items is 1,300 acres. Total apparently excludes 1,300 acres for water spreading.

National Park Service estimated that in excess of two million are in need of corrective soil and moisture conservation measures and that more than one million acres of those lands were formerly public domain lands.

Acres of the National Forest Service lands needing corrective measures in the 11 western states were determined on the basis of land needing gully stabilization, sheet erosion control, stabilization of dunes and blowouts, stream and lakeshore stabilization, rehabilitation of abandoned roads and trails, and mine restoration. The definitions of the above measures and description of the related project works are presented in appendix F.

The areas of Forest Service lands needing corrective measures were compared with the areas of Forest Service Watershed lands rehabilitated from 1950 through 1967. Table 10 presents a comparison of areas which received corrective measures from 1958 through 1967 with the areas needing corrective measures of July 1, 1967. It will be observed that the areas receiving corrective measures over the 10-year period were but a small fraction of the areas requiring corrective measures as of July 1,1967.

Bureau of Land Management lands needing corrective measures were determined on the basis of lands needing brush control, pitting, furrowing, contouring deep tillage, seeding, weed control, and water spreading. The definitions of these measures and descriptions of related project works are presented in appendix F.

The areas of Fish and Wildlife Service lands in need of corrective measures are determined on the basis of similar corrective measures as described for the Bureau of Land Management lands. The acreages of Fish and Wildlife Service lands in the 11 western states needing corrective measures were reported only for the state of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

Table 11 presents a comparison of areas which received corrective measures from 1958 through 1967 with the areas reported by the Bureau of LandManagement and Fish and Wildlife Service to need corrective measures as of 1968. Here again, it is observed that the areas which received corrective measures over the 10 year period were but a small fraction of the areas quiring corrective measures as of 1968.
