Established 1845 Makers of Standard Weights and Measures and Testing Equipment A NEW DEVELOPMENT IN THE RAILROAD SITUATION The late announcement of an increase in passenger and freight rates has been accepted by a majority of people as another inch added to the beanstock by means of which the High Cost of Living is climbing to the sky. But if we will stop to consider, we will realize that this cloud has a silver lining, for this step will put the railroads on a reasonably sound credit basis. The freight cars now in use are in sad need of repairs and are greatly deficient in numbers. CARS! CARS! We want CARS! is the constant song of everyone; but, unlike Longfellow's song, this one seems to disappear in mid-air and the CARS are not forthcoming. What is the use of producing things if we cannot deliver them to the places where they may be sold? Why work up a foreign trade in ourfoodstuffs if we cannot get them to seaboard? Millions of dollars will be lost by the inability of farmers to thresh grain because they cannot store it and because elevators cannot hold it. No mill or factory dare sell products for future delivery within one thousand miles for fear it cannot get the goods to the customers. There is no use to attempt an increase in production either of foodstuffs or manufactured articles until the transportation system is placed on its feet. We have all heard the dire predictions of a coal famine during the coming year. The present status of the railroads is one cause of this situation. In view of all these facts, it will be far better for us to accept higher freight and passenger rates for the purpose of re-establishing railroad credit. which will mean more cars, better cars and a general renovation of the railroads throughout the country, than for transportation matters to continue their down hill course. Higher freight and passenger rates are, then, the paramount necessity of the hour. $2.00 Per Year |
