THIS book is intended mainly for junior members of the banking profession and for that growing section of the general public which is taking an interest in banking matters. It seeks to present the origin and development of the cheque system, and also to describe the manner in which cheques are dealt with and passed through the work in an English bank. The law of cheques is also touched

upon.

A knowledge of these matters is essential to the ambitious bank clerk who aspires to be a "banker " "banker" or at any rate to play a worthy part in his profession. The history and development of the cheque are full of romance, and I have taken the wide view that these are inseparable from the principles of deposit banking, the importance of which has been amply-in some instances somewhat painfully— demonstrated by events following the post-war boom period. I have endeavoured to avoid, as much as possible, needless repetition of matters which are already set out in the standard text-books. In regard to the legal aspect

of the cheque, it is difficult to break much fresh ground, and I am indebted to the standard authorities specified in the various foot-notes, especially to Sir John Paget, Bart., K.C., who has edited the manuscript of the book.

In regard to practical work I have drawn largely on personal experience, supplemented by various authorities as indicated. I am especially indebted to the publishers and editor of the Bankers' Magazine for permission to reproduce extracts from some of my own contributions to that magazine.
