I was asked to make a school-edition of these Lives by /striking out a few things in them which might be thought objectionable reading for girls and young people, and by adding some short notes. I have done both the one and the other, and I have also sought to relieve the young reader, for whose use this edition is designed, by omitting here and there a Latin extract, and still further by abridging certain details which Johnson himself treats as meriting little notice, and which have now almost entirely lost their interest. Some abridgment has thus been applied to Johnson's copious quotations from the criticisms of Settle and Milbourne upon Dryden. My notes I have strictly limited to what seemed required for making the Lives intelligible and interesting to that class of readers which I have here in view. These notes of mine are placed at the end of the volume, and are marked by an asterisk in the text; the notes marked by numbers, and placed at the foot of the text, are Johnson's own. |
