revenue with the currency of the country, to the reduction and modification of the duties imposed so as not to exceed an amount of taxation beyond what is necessary for an economical administration of the government, be referred to the Committee of Ways and Means.

3. Resolved, That so much of said message as relates to the condition of the army of the United States, to fortifications, securities of cities and roadsteads, to the establishment of military posts on the line of land travel to Oregon, together with the report of the Secretary of War, excepting such parts as may be otherwise referred, be referred to the Committee on Military Affairs.

4. Resolved, That so much of said message as relates to Indian tribes, Indian affairs, and the removal of all the tribes residing within the limits of the several States, together with so much of the report of the Secretary of War as relates to these matters, be referred to the Committee on Indian Affairs.

5. Resolved, That so much of said message as relates to the navy of the United States, to the propriety of a division of the Bureau of Construction, Equipment, and Repairs, to the establishment of a navy-yard at Memphis, and a ropewalk in connexion therewith, together with the report of the Secretary of the Navy, be referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.

6. Resolved, That so much of said message as relates to the occupation and settlement of Oregon, to the enactment of laws for the government of said territory, and for the protection and security of the persons and prop erty of our citizens and inhabitants therein, be referred to the Committee on the Territories.

7. Resolved, That so much as relates to the Post Office Department, to the alteration of the tariff of postage, to the mode of sustaining the department, together with the report of the Postmaster General, be referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

8. Resolved, That so much of said message as relates to the policy of establishing a regular line of steamships to ply between this country and foreign ports, and upon our own waters, for the transportation of the mail, be referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads; and so much as relates to the propriety of placing such ships under the command of experienced officers of the navy, be referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.

9. Resolved, That so much of said message as relates to appropriations made by Congress for the improvement of the rivers of the west and of the harbors on the lakes, and impresses on Congress the great importance of withholding appropriations from improvements "which are not ascertained by previous examination and survey," be referred to the Committee on Commerce.

10. Resolved, That so much of said message as relates to the District of Columbia, be referred to the Committee for the District of Columbia. A motion was made by Mr. Charles J. Ingersoll that the petition and accompanying papers in the case of the executors of James Reeside be referred to a select committee, to consist of five members.

Mr. Cave Johnson moved that the said papers be referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

And the question was put, first, Will the House agree to the said motion of Mr. Cave Johnson?

And decided in the affirmative.

In conformity with the standing order of the House, the diagrams accompanying the annual message of the President of the United States were referred to the Committee on Engraving.

On motion of Mr. Brodhead,

Resolved, That the Committee on the Judiciary be directed to inquire and report what amount of unclaimed dividends remains in the hands of the officers, agents, or trustees of the old Bank of the United States, whose charter expired in 1811, and what action (if any) it would be proper for Congress to take in relation thereto.

Mr. John Quincy Adams gave notice of a motion for leave to introduce a bill for the relief of Joseph Holmes and others, owner and legal representatives of the crew of the schooner Industry.

In pursuance of previous notice, Mr. Hoge asked, obtained leave, and introduced a bill (No. 433) to direct the President of the United States to cause the reserved lead-mines in the State of Illinois, and Territories of Wisconsin and Iowa, to be exposed to public sale: which bill was read a first and second time, and referred to the Committee on Public Lands.

Mr. John Quincy Adams presented a memorial of a committee of the American Statistical Association, representing that various and gross errors have been discovered in the printed edition of the Sixth Census of the United States, and setting forth at length what they conceive to be those errors: which memorial was referred to a select committee consisting of nine members.

Ordered, That Mr. Adams, Mr. Rhett, Mr. Rayner, Mr. Stiles, Mr. Maclay, Mr. Brengle, Mr. Foster, Mr. Shepherd Cary, and Mr. Caleb B. Smith, be the said committee.
