Admiralty Office, Auguft 2.

Copy of a Letter from Mr. Joshua Hocquard, Commander of the Hazard private Ship of War, to Evan Nepean, Efq.; dated at Jersey, the 17th July.

Sir,

I BEG leave to acquaint you, for the information of my Lords Com. miffioners of the Admiralty, that on my return from a cruise in the cutter Hazard, private letter of marque, from Jerfey, under my command, on the morning of the 4th inftant, at half paft three A. M. the weftwardmoft point of Guernsey bearing S. E. by E. four or five miles, we fell in with, and, after a chafe of an hour, captured the Ajax French lugger privateer,

from

from St. Maloes, mounting four carriage brafs guns, and 23 men; failed the night before from Bocha, and had not taken any thing,

I have the honour to be, Sir, &c.

JOS. HOCQUARD.

Copy of a Letter from Captain Ferris, of his Majefty's Ship Ruby, to Evan Nepean, Efq; dated off the Start, July 30.

Sir,

I BEG leave to acquaint you, for the information of their Lordships, that being on my paffage from St. Helena to England, at five A. M. on Sunday the 13th inftant, in lat. 45 deg. north, and long. 29 deg. west, I obferved a strange fail to windward, which, by her motions, appeared to be an enemy's cruifer; I therefore thought it right to make all poffible fail to reconnoitre her.

Night coming on before I could well difcover what fhe was, I fhortened fail for the convoy; and at daylight, in the morning of the 14th (it having been calm during the greatest part of the night), I faw the fame fhip about three miles ahead, who, upon my making fail in chafe, and firing feveral fhot, fhowed national colours.

Light winds having prevailed during the whole of the day, fhe was enabled, by her fweeps, to keep juft without gun-fhot; but towards evening, a breeze springing up in our favour, I gained on her fast, and, at one A. M. on Tuesday the 15th, took poffeffion of her.

She proves to be La Fortune privateer, of Bourdeaux, a very fine fhip, mounting 16 eight-pounders, four long twelves, and two 6-pound carronades, all brafs; her complement 202 men; but had on board when taken only 188, the reft having been fent on board the Fame brig, from Sierra Leone, bound to London, the only capture she had made in a cruise of one month from Bourdeaux.

I beg leave to add, that she appears to me to be a fhip well calculated for his Majesty's fervice, being remarkably ftrong built, coppered and copper fastened, and a very excellent failer: the prefent is only the fecond Cruise fince fhe was built. I am, &c.

Copy of a Letter from the Earl of St. Vincent, K. B. Admiral of the White, &c. to Evan Nepean, Efq; dated on board his Majesty's Ship Royal George, at Sea, the 4th inftant.

Sir,

I DID not think the enterprise of Sir Edward Hamilton, or of Captain Campbell, could have been rivalled, until I read the enclofed letter from Sir Edward Pellew, relating the defperate fervice performed by acting Lieutenant Coghlan, of the Viper cutter, on the 29th July, which has filled me with pride and admiration; and although the circumftance of his not having completed his time in his Majefty's navy operates at prefent against his receiving the reward he is moft ambitious of obtaining, I am perfuaded the Lords Commiffioners of the Admiralty will do all in
