A delightfully funny book is "Fables for the Frivolous," by Guy Wetmore Carryll, who has most

cleverly and originally transposed the old familiar La Fontaine fables into latter day English verse, adapting them to modern thought and humor. A harmonious accompaniment form the exceedingly amusing illustrations by Peter Newell. It is a happy creation which will afford much pleasure. (8vo. cloth. Price $1.08.)

A number of artistic publications have been issued by R. H. Russel, the well-known New York publisher. Prominent among these is Charles Dana Gibson's new album entitled "Sketches and Cartoons." (Large folio, bound in Japan vellum in box. Price $3.75.) It contains eighty-four of his best cartoons and sketches, beautifully printed on heavy paper and handsomely bound, and forms the third book in the series of which Drawings by C. D. Gibson was the first and Pictures of People the second. This new one is just as artistic and characteristically clever as all

Books for Children. To give an adequate review of books for children is a hard task. Embarrass de richesse is, as usual, the signature of this year's juvenile literature. The best advice for the choice of picture books for the little ones, is: go to the store and select from the multitude of attractive toy books what pleases you best, and what seems to you most to appeal to the individual character of your pets. For the older children there are the standard juvenile classics: the books by Louise M. Alcott, Mrs. L. T. Meade, Mrs. Eliza beth Champney (the "Witch Winnie" books), Martha Finley (the "Elsie" books), Edward S. Ellis, Henty, Alger, etc., etc. All these are too well known to need special mention. In this holiday review I will therefore confine myself to a few new publications, which by virtue of their intrinsic educa

tional value or artistic attractiveness and originality arrest our attention and deserve recommendation. The omission of others equally pretty and commendable does not of course imply a slight on my part, nor a suggestion of their inferiority.

A charming book, not for, but about the little one, is "Baby's Record," just published by Frederick A. Stokes Co. There is no lack of Baby's Diaries, to be filled up with the biography of the baby by the fond parents; but the one before us is the most beautiful of all. It is charmingly illustrated by Maud Humphrey with twelve illustrations in colors, and thirty in black and white, and will be cheered with enthusiasm by all who love children. To young couples, just blessed by the birth of a little one there can be no prettier gift. The book is in 4to. size, and costs, nicely bound in cloth $1.88. The same famous child's

artist has created also a new charming picture book for the little ones, entitled "Baby Folk" (published by the same firm; price 90 cents), which with its sweet colored baby pictures and pretty little stories and verses by Elizabeth S. Tucker, will be one of the favorites of this year's toy books.

Since the Golliwogg, that funny creation of Florence K. Upton, made his appearance two or three years ago, he has become quite a favorite. with the children. The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg and The Golliwogg's Bicycle Club are the titles of the two previous albums; this year a new one has been published, entitled "The Golliwogg at the Sea Side" (oblong 4to. Price $1.50 each). The new Golliwogg book is just as funny and amusing as the older ones, and that is saying enough. Another comical

album for children is called "Nothing But Nonsense" (oblong 4to. Price $1.35). The colored pictures by Mary Kernahan are caricatures, grotesque but not crude, and are in their exaggerated, yet artistic, originality so laughable and funny that not only children alone, but their elders as well will find much amusement in them.

"The Travellers and Other Stories," with pictures and verses by Mrs. Arthur Gaskin (small 4to. Price $1.08), is a very pretty and dainty little book in the Kate Greenway's style, which like the afore
