This book is an idyllic pastoral, full of romantic pathos. The motif is that all art should have an ideal. Miss Rives has created an ideal of manliness which is a stimulant to the soul wherein lives all inspiration. The character of Glenn Andrews is a tribute to man, aud shows the possibility of strength under tense pressure. The girl, Esther Powell, whom he guards very nobly, at last acquires the strength that he holds constantly before her, and develops into an ambitious, brave, splendid woman, with fortitude to bear all the burdens that life can bring. The story is a study, and is the best work from this young author's pen. There is one very notable quality in the book. It is a sincere and faithful portrayal of the beauty of sacrifice, and the attempt to keep a young life illusioned.

It is the best book on the Republic of Mexico that has yet been published. Certainly it gives a new and most attractive view of our sister republic, and is full of suggestion and instruction as to what the Latin-American races of the New World can accomplish under favorable conditions. The quiet power of style, with its pathos and humor, the intimate knowledge of the village life of Duckington, where the scene is laid, and that same sympathetic quality in portraying humble life and characters make "Belle" something more than the ordinary story for grown girls. Although the book is a love story, the tone is thoroughly healthful, and the choice of lovers by the heroine should meet the approval of all.

Fables for the Frivolous. (With Apologies to La Fontaine.) By Guy Wetmore Carryl. With illustrations by Peter Newell. 8vo. cloth. Price $1.08. By mail $1.23.

The apologue is perhaps the oldest existing form of literary entertainment, and in his "Fables for the Frivolous " Mr. Carryl has confessedly followed in the immortal footprints of Æsop and La Fontaine. He has even dared to put new wine into the old bottles, an experiment which is generally accounted to be hazardous in the extreme, and only to be justified by its success. But Mr. Carryl has succeeded, and his new liquor makes very agreeable tipple. There is something about it that recalls the familiar flavor of ancient wisdom, but the draught has been fortified and charged with an effervescing wit that is peculiarly piquant and " age-end."

Fair God (The). A Tale of the Conquest of Mexico. It is printed from beautiful new plates, in two volumes generously illustrated by Mr. Eric Pape, whose unusual skill as an artist is well known. Mr. Pape has engaged in the work of illustrating "The Fair God" with marked enthusiasm. The story has thrilled and charmed him; it has inspired in him a great ambition to make his artistic accompaniment worthy of the marvelous tale. To accomplish this he went to Mexico, and in the very scenes of the story his imagination summoned to life again the actors and the beautiful and tragic incidents in the world-famous drama. It is quite within the truth to say that his designs show a power, a range, an intelligence, an appreciation, a compelling genius, rarely devoted to a work of this kind. They recreate the heroes, the stormy passions, the beauty and glory of the Mexican conquest in a very remarkable way. The two handsome volumes will rank among the great books of the holiday season. cents.

Mrs. Craig selected a round three dozen of fairy stories from different sources. Some of them are Northern, some are Greek, but all have been tested by time and have preserved their fascination for countless generations of children. Mrs. Craig has kept the spirit and the story, but has added to the beauty of them by leaving out some details that offend our more scrupulous taste. She has made them absolutely suitable for children and since it is now generally admittted that such stories tend to cultivate the imagination, they may be safely recommended as one of the best of books for the nursery. It is charmingly illustrated. Fairy Spinning Wheel (The) and the Tales it Told. By Catulle Mendes. With pictures by Marion L. Peabody. Quarto. Price $1.50. By mail $1.65.

There is no more beautiful collection of fairy stories extant than those "The Fairy Spinning Wheel" tells, what with their quaint, unexpected turns, charming conceit and happy rendering. The stories have never before appeared in English, and now that they are obtainable are likely to find firm triends and many among the little folks. The translation by Mr. Thomas J. Vivian, faithfully preserves the delightful flavor of the original.

Miss Marion L. Peabody has pictured the volume with fourteen most attractive illustrations, and has, as well, designed some delightful end papers, which are printed in color, and a cover which is unique. A more charming gift book for children will be hard to find.

Flashlights on Nature. Price $1.08. Mr. Allen has here described some of the every-day miracles in the lives of our most familiar insects and plants. While forming a part of Mr. Mabie's "Under the Trees, and Elsewhere,' "The Forest of Arden" is really independent of the rest of the book. There have been repeated demands for the publication by itself of this charming piece of idealism, and the publishers have determined, in response to this evident demand, to issue it independently. Mr. Will H. Low has enriched the book with a number of full-page illustrations in his most charming manner, and with decorations and ornaments. No pains have been spared to give this literary gem a fitting setting, and the result is a book of unusual charm in matter and manner. Nothing could be more beautifully adapted for a moderatepriced holiday gift of real intrinsic value.

Every branch in Me that beareth not Fruit, He taketh away; and every branch that beareth Fruit, He cleanseth it." By Fruit he understands Character and Conduct and the influence of a holy life and words and prayers; and the great central truth that he brings clearly before his readers is that "the Divine Life whether as found in the Vine (that is, in God) or seen in the Fruit, or handled and partaken of by men, must be one and the same." Mr. Murray is an eloquent divine and is so carried away by the deep spiritual meaning of his subject that he cannot fail to move those who sympathize with him.

General History of the World (A). By Victor Duruy, formerly minister of Public Instruction and Member of the Academy. Translated from the French and thoroughly revised, with an introduction and summary of contemporaneous history from 1848 to September, 1898, by Edwin A. Grosvenor, Professor of European History in Amherst College. With 24 colored maps and index. 12mo. cloth. Price $1.50. By mail $1.70. Victor Duruy's great work on Universal or General History is divided into five parts. It begins with the ancient history of the East, embracing the Chinese and Mongols, the Indians and Egyptians, the Assyrians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, Medes and Persians. Its treatment of Greek and Roman history is so complete that the student desiring admission to any of our universities need not seek further for preparation in those branches. It gives a brilliant and well-balanced account of the Middle Ages, and it brings modern history down to the memorable year, 1848 fessor Grosvenor, whose brilliant "History of Constantinople" has made his name so widely known, takes up the work at this point. He furnishes a complete and most interesting summary of recent history from 1848 to the actual present. He does more than this; excavations and discoveries constantly going on have extended and widened our knowledge of the past; and thus, where Duruy's original observations or statements may have become antiquated, Professor Grosvenor, availing himself of the best authorities, has modified them or replaced them with betterfounded facts and conclusions. All the charm of the fascinating style remains; but the work is brought up to date, and rendered the most complete and satisfactory general history that can be found. Admirable maps are generously supplied; and the volume will prove a boon to all students and teachers of history, as well as to readers in general.

The author of the "Life Books" gives us in this booklet a clear and concise statement of our true relations with the Infinite Life and Power; asking the reader to take nothing from mere hearsay, nothing from the authority of someone else, all deductions are drawn from his own reason and insight. The great central truth of the booklet will come as a revelation to many, to others it will serve to give renewed life to certain realizations of which they themselves have already been more or less conscious. It is written in a clear and simple manner and is designed for “the people,' as all of Mr. Trine's writings are, and as all thus far have so abundantly proved.

Gunner Aboard the “ Yankee" (A). From the Diary of "Number Five" of the after port gun. Introduction by Rear-Admiral W. T. Sampson, U. S. N. Illustrated. 8vo. cloth. Price $1.08. By mail $1.23.

This most interesting account by a New Yorker of the adventures of the Naval Reserves in the "Yankee " during the war with Spain, their stirring fights and their breezy experiences, is intended primarily for boys; but many an older reader will find entertainment and instruction in the record of these citizen-sailors who made such a name for themselves and their ship. Rear-Admiral Sampson's introduction speaks very appreciatively of the readiness with which the reserves transformed themselves into efficient members of Uncle Sam's fighting force afloat. It is a complete and striking presentation of the life from the sailor's standpoint.

Herald of the West (A). A Romance of 1812. By J. A Altsheler, author of "A Soldier of Manhattan and "The Sun of Saratoga." 12mo. cloth. Price $1.08. By mail $1.22.

The author's brilliant success in this country and in England as a writer of American historical romances will direct especial attention to his new book, which embodies his most ambitious work. He opens with some interesting pictures of social life and political conditions in Washington just before the War of 1812, and later, the reader gains an insight into the contemporary life of Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. The passages dealing with the war itself include singularly vivid and dramatic accounts of the capture of Washington by the British and the battle of New Orleans, both noteworthy contributions to American literature.

Her Majesty the King. A romance of the harem. By James Jeffrey Roche. With 15 full-page illustrations. 12mo. cloth. Price 90 cents. By mail $1.02. Mr. Roche's "Her Majesty the King" is quite unlike any other romance of the harem that has ever been in print. The plot is really remarkable for its ingenious entanglement, while the humor is spontaneous and free from affectation, and the satire cuts deep. Her Majesty the King, the Pasha Muley Mustapha, Kayenna the Eloquent, the Sultan of Kopaul, and Shacabic the Wayfarer, to say nothing of the others, are characters but seldom met with, either between covers or abroad; were they, life would have more smiles and laughter. The pearls of wisdom dropped from the lips of the venerable Wayfarer are, indeed, in great danger of becoming classic. Mr. Frank Bird Masters's many delightfully characteristic illustrations and the oriental binding add greatly to the flavor of the volume.
