Cheerful Yesterdays. By Thomas Wentworth Higginson. 8vo. cloth. Price $1.50. By mail $1.70. Continental Dragoon, The. A Romance of Philipse Manor House in 1778 by R. N. Stephens, author of "An Enemy to the King." Illustrated by H. C. Edwards, 1 vol. cloth. Price $1.08. By mail $1.23.

Crook of the Bough, The. By Minie Mureil Dowie, author of "A Girl in the Karpathians." 12mo. Price 90 cents. By mail $1.02.

Mrs. Henry Norman's new story is as breezy and bright as every reader of her last very popular book would expect. The heroine is an English girl of the most advanced type, who becomes interested in a handsome young Turkish colonel, and the pictures of Constantinople and the real Turkey are especially illuminating. Not the least striking feature of the volume is the subtle way in which the author presents the essential and fundamental differences of character between the East and the West.

Cruel Side of War, The. With the Army of the Potomac. Letters from the Headquarters of the United States Sanitary Commission during the Peninsular Campaign in Virginia in 1862. By Katharine Prescott Wormeley. Illustrated with portraits. 12mo. cloth. Price 90 cents. By mail $1.02.

A prefatory note to this book, emanating from the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery of the State of Massachusetts, says:

"Most of the writings relating to the War of the Rebellion have been confined to accounts of battles, or to adventures so closely connected with battles as to seem an essential part of the conflict itself. The book here given to the public as "The Other Side of War" touches on matters almost entirely outside the noise and smoke, the glory and pomp of military operations. Yet it presents scenes so intimately related to the army that they seem an essential part of a soldier's experience.

"The general work of the Sanitary Commission has been fully set forth in histories and in its own invaluable papers and reports. This more personal record of its earlier labors tells a story not elsewhere told, of how it began, and under what circumstances it first carried on its heroic work. As such, these remembrances of the Hospital Transport Service are presented by the Commandery of the State of Massachusetts of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States to its Companions, as a portion of its contribution to the history of those eventful days, and in grateful acknowledgment of the loyalty and devotion of those men and women whose fortitude and grace have given to the Sanitary Commission its honored place in the story of the great conflict."

Girl at Cobhurst, The. By Frank R. Stockton. 12mo. Price $1.08. By mail $1.23.

The ingenious unfolding of the plot in Mr. Stockton's new love story is a surprising achievement, even for such a master of intricacies, and the fact that the novel has not appeared serially adds to the freshness and novelty of its effect. The entertaining characters, too-the match-making old maid, the inimitable French cook, and so on- bear the unmistakable stamp of his genius. The first edition alone is of 10,000 copies, and the heavy advance orders indicate a popularity for the book equal to that of any of the author's best known productions.

Hassan: A Fellah. A Romance of Palestine. By Henry Gillman. Crown Svo. Cloth extra.

600 pages. Price $1.50. By mail $1.65. The author of this powerful romance lived in Palestine for over five years, and during his residence there had unusual and peculiar advantages for seeing and knowing the people and the country, enabling him to enrich his story with local color, characteristics, and information not found in any other work of the kind on the Holy Land. He has selected the present time for the story, but has drawn freely from all the rich treasures of the past for ornament.

The pen-portraits of the people are studies made upon the spot, and the descriptions of Jerusalem and the surrounding country are word-pictures of the land as it is today, and therefore of special value. The portions connected with the "Thar," or blood-fued between the Syrian villages, and the insurrection in Crete, are not only of uncommon interest and power, but are also intensely dramatic. Sensational and extraordinary as some of the incidents are, the author has facts for all of them. The book is dedicated to Mr. Gladstone, with his special permission --a very unusual exception on his part.

Isles and Shrines of Greece, The. By Hon.

Samuel J. Barrows. With 19 illustrations. 12mo. cloth.
Price $1.50. By mail $1.65.

This book is a partial expression of gratitude for rich opportunities enjoyed in Greece, where few persons, I fancy, have had a more varied experience. The great

difficulty has been to compress within the limits of one volume the mass of material at my command. No place is described that I have not seen, though I saw many places which there is no room to describe. Nearly all of the illustrations are reproductions from photographs from my own

camera.

In fulfilling a desire to enter Greece by the portals of the Oydssey and to leave it through the Trojan gates of the Illiad, my trip included the Ionian Islands, the Peloponnesus, Phocis, Thessaly, Attica, the Ægean Islands and Troy. Italian Literature. By Richard Garnett, C. B.

Dr. Garnett's abundant scholarship and power of discrimination have furnished an admirable equipment for the preparation of this needed work. In traversing the broad held of Italian literature he has not confined himself sim

ply to a few masterpieces, but, without burdening his story with details, he indicates characteristic phases and significant movements, which are happily illustrated. His work is clear, interesting and informing.

This stirring historical story is laid in Cromwell's days, when Royalists and Parliamentarians were still at strife; and a prominent character in the novel is the Protector himself. Juleps and Clover. By M. Vaughn Wilde. R. F. Fenno & Co. 16mo. cloth. Gilt top. Price 35 cents. By mail 40 cents.

The Juleps in this title are the usual Southern article and the Clover is the first name of a Southern belle who is the heroine of the story. The scenes are laid in North Carolina and hither comes a Northern man. Quite the most spirited and convincing part of the book is the opening chapter, which depicts him on the road. There is a dangerous ford to be crossed on horseback and he is caught by the drift in the raging torrent, loses his horse, and barely es capes with his life. This and other passages descriptive of nature and action are creditably done. M. Vaughn Wilde, it should be said, is Mrs. Henry Siegel.

Kronstadt. A Romance. By Max Pemberton. Illustrated. 12mo. cloth. Price $1.08. By mail $1.23. Mr. Pemberton has written a stirring romance of love, adventure and political intrigue, and no reader who begins his tale will be content to leave it unfinished. The interior of the gloomy fortress of Kronstadt, the Baltic, the Finnish Islands and London, furnish the background for swiftly moving scenes which are tense with suspended interest, with the power of love and the stress of peril. Although a story of the present day, the pulse of adventure and romance throbs as strongly in these pages as in a mediæval tale.

Literary Statesmen and Others. By Norman

Hapgood. 12mo. cloth. Price $1.10. By mail $1.25. A book of "essays on men seen from a distance," by one of our younger writers, Mr. Norman Hapgood, who is already known as a man of much promise. He has the unusual distinction of starting his career by a wide acceptance from the English reviewers. In the Book Buyer, Mr. Hamilton Wright Mabie says of Mr. Hapgood:

"His touch is never heavy, and his manner is admirably adapted to his themes. He is thoughtful, discriminating, and sympathetic. His studies of Lord Rosebery, Mr. Morley, and Mr. Balfour are sagacious and interpretative in the best sense. His comments on Stendhall, Mérimée, and Henry James are in the best vein of contemporary criticism; they are broad, tolerant, and at the same time clear in their application of moral and artistic principles. Mr. Hapgood's balance and poise, no less than his intelligence, evidence the possession of a consistent and coherent view of life and art. There is much to be anticipated from a critic whose knowledge is so adequate and whose methods are so sound. To this group of books he contributes genuine critical insight and quality."

Londoners, The. By Robert Hichens. 12mo. cloth.

Price $1.10. By mail $1.25

Mr. Robert Hichens has already given evidence of varied and distinct abililities. It is indeed difficult to reconcile his many manners. Since he first came to public notice with that delightful present-day burlesque "The Green Carnation" until the appearance of "Flames" he could hardly have shown more diversity of interest. His latest story is in his earlier vein again. It treats of smart London society, in town and at Ascot, in extremely clever and witty manner. In contrast to the usual society novel, Mr. Hichens has made his book the story of how a woman tried to get out of society.

Lost Man's Lane. A Second Episode in the life of Amelia Butterworth. An intensely interesting detective story, written in this popular author's best style By Anna Katharine Green. 16mo. paper. Price 33 cents. By mail 43 cents.

Love in Friendship. (A nameless sentiment.) With a preface in fragments from Stendhal. Translated from the French by Henri Pène DuBois. Cloth. Price $1.08. By mail $1.23.

This is the romance in letters of a man and a woman, extremely intelligent and accustomed to analyzing themseives as Stendhal and Paul Bourget would have everyone do. They achieved the improbable aim of absolute love in friendship. The details of their experiences are told here so sincerely, so naively, that it is evident the letters are published as they were written, and that they were not written for publication. They are full of intimate details of family life among great artists, of revelations of methods of literary work and musical composition. There has not been so much interest in an individual work since the time of Marie Bashkirtseff's Confessions, which were not as intelligent as these.

Lowden Sabbath Man, A. By Robert Louis Stevenson. With 26 full-page illustrations by A. S. Boyd. Square 8vo. Price $1 25. By mail $1.40.

Open Boat, The, And other Tales of Adventure. By Stephen Crane. Author of "The Red Badge of Courage." 12mo. cloth. Price 75 cents. By mail 85

cents.

The publication of Mr. Crane's book was postponed twice, greatly to the benefit of the volume as the author has added several tales of a most noteworthy character, making a collection quite unique and more satisfying than any of his earlier work notwithstanding its great promise. The opening chapter recounts the author's own experience off the coast of Florida, and is a most vivid and dramatic presentation of the behavior of a company of castaways fighting to the last limit of endurance against a destruction that seemed inevitable. The whole book, the contents of which follow, shows the hand of a new and powerful observer. The Open Boat, A Man and Some Others, One-Dash Horse, Flanagan, The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, The Wise Men, Death and the Child, The Five White Mice.

Of "The Open Boat," the Criterion says: "So searching is the psychology of the narrative, so vivid is the description of the sea, which is represented, not as Hugo pictures it, as a monster fiend, clutching at man for a prey, but as an utterly indifferent power; and so striking are the phrases which bejewel this story that it must take its place among the short-prose classics of our language. It is completely American in its tone, and completely individual in its treatment."

"Pearl Necklace of Thoughts of Women," is a little treasure-house of the bright, serious and somber creations framed in words by George Sand, Queen Mary Leckzinska, Mme. de Sevigne, Carmen Sylva, Mme. de Pompadour, Marie Antoinette, and others famous in letters. This little volume is as bitingly fascinating as a cabinet of 1are gems.)" The Boston Globe.

"A dainty book, it has been translated from the French by Henry Pene du Bois, contains a large number of maxims and thoughts of celebrated women, among them being George Sand, Ninon de Ninclos, Carmen Sylva, Mme. Roland. Women of this stamp do not, as a rule, put pen to paper unless they have something to write that is worth writing, and hence we may be sure that in this collection of their choice thoughts and maxims a good deal of wisdom can be found by the careful gleaner.

**In any case it is a book well worth reading. The women who speak to us through it were among the greatest in their day, and if only for that reason, we ought to be glad to hear what they have to say on any subject." -New York Herald.

"The translation is vigorous and graceful."--N. Y. Evening Sun.
