TRAVELS IN INDIA OF JEAN BAPTISTE TAVERNIER, BARON OF AUBONNE Translated from the original French Edition of 1676, with a Biographical Sketch of the Author, Notes, Appendices, &c., by V. BALL, LL.D., F.R.S., F.G. S., Director of the Science and Art Museum, Dublin, Author of "Jungle Life in India," "The Economic Geology of India," &c. With Illustrations and Maps. 2 Vols., Medium 8vo, £2 25.

The Academy says:-" He is a traveller whose works we could ill afford to lose; and Dr. Ball's translations of the chapters relating to India and Further India well deserve a place beside Sir Henry Yule's 'Marco Polo' and the publications of the Hakluyt Society. The translator's notes err, if anything, on the side of brevity, except when the subject touches on the mineralogy of India, of which Dr. Ball knows more than most people. But both the translation and annotation are so well done that one can only hope the remaining portion of Tavernier's travels will now be taken in hand by the same editor."

The Scotsman says:-"What will always give importance to his notes are the glimpses that he gives of India, its princes, and its people two centuries and more ago, when Europe was only nibbling at its trade and influence, and when the British were of less secount in the east than the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the French."

EDINBURGH, May 31, 1889. DEAR SIR,-I have just returned from a six weeks' stay at the Ben Nevis Observatory, and while there had an opportunity of testing the admirable qualities of your new "Watkin" Aneroid. The result has been most satisfactory, the extreme error noted being only about the one-hundredth of an inch. During my stay at the Observatory the Aneroid was frequently tested by taking it down a couple of thousand feet and then Observer, Scott. Met. Soc. comparing it with the standard on my return. The results obtained speak volumes for the high-class work R. C. MOSSMAN, F.R. M.S., manship and great accuracy you have attained in the manufacture of this instrument. (Signed)
