PEN PICTURES OF THE WAR. 4, Ave Maria Lane, Paternoster Row, London, E.C.

BY MEN AT THE FRONT.

VOLUME I.

The Campaign in Natal to the Battle of Colenso.

EXTRACT FROM PREFACE.

This book is an attempt to enable the public at home to realise war as it is waged nowadays by the soldiers at the front. Tommy Atkins, after laying down the rifle, grasps the pen; and, using his helmet or a meat-tin as a writing-desk, writes home his plain, unvarnished story of where he has been, what he has done, and what he has seen. We have, therefore, material for a realistic pen picture of war as it actually is.

ANNUAL INDEX TO PERIODICALS.

The Annual Index to the Contents of the British and American Periodicals, issued in connection with the London Review of Reviews, supplies exhaustive classified lists of articles on every subject which has been dealt with in the periodicals of the year. It may thus be described as a series of bibliographies alphabetically arranged for convenience of reference.

Looking at the real thing;

Of hearing the right pronunciation of the word; and of seeing the correct spelling of it.

You avoid, too, confusion and waste of time in explaining what the thing is like. For instance, try to explain to French people what a pudding is like, and show them the picture of one, and you will soon be convinced which is the best method.

As pictures are used for every thing taught, the attention is constantly fixed, recapitulations are easy, questions are understood at once, and a quick grasp of the language can be made by advanced pupils.

The Classes are held every day, and as never more than five pupils of the same knowledge are grouped together, the progress is quick and certain. This method is employed with great success by
