PREFACE THE object of the present work is to furnish Owners of Collieries, Managers, Viewers, and others engaged in the management of Coal Mines, with a compendium of the Statutory Law on the subject, in the form of a Digest. The Digest is divided into chapters, embodying the Coal Mines Regulation Acts, 1887 to 1900, and the special Acts relating to Coal Mines in the Forest of Dean, together with the various other enactments affecting Coal Mines with respect to Payment of Wages, Liability of Employers, Rateability of Mines, Criminal Law, and Legal Proceedings; while, in order to meet the requirements of Owners and Managers in Scotland and Ireland, the Statutory provisions specially applicable to those countries have been placed in a separate chapter. Though primarily intended for those interested in the practical working of Collieries, the Authors hope that their work may also be found useful to the Legal Profession and to His Majesty's Inspectors of Mines.
