To the South as well as the North, to the West as well as the East, with a spirit of equal justice to all, this book is dedicated-our common land-our indissoluble Union.

"With malice toward none; with charity for all."

is my desire to state facts as viewed from a strictly national, rather than from a sectional or partisan standpoint. But it is not without the sphere of legitimate history to aid by such a statement of facts, in creating a more generous national sentiment; and a conviction on the part of all sections that political righteousness has not been the exclusive property of any one part of the United States. It is time to deal justly by the South; and recognize its full share in the better part of nation building; while at the same time we do not overlook the diverse obligations that naturally fell upon the complementary sections. It is easy for either North or South to perceive the blunders in action and defects of character of the opposite section; it is difficult to generously measure each other's achievements; and to help atone for each other's errors. In writing a history of attempts at nullification and secession, I shall not forget that they are expressions of that intense individualism which was the most potent factor in creating our Republic.
