have been at the time of granting such diploma in no particular less than those prescribed by the laws of the State, and which shall have received the approval of the Board of Medical Examiners that year. The requirements for matriculation in the University of California Medical School as above stated cover also the requirements of the Association of American Medical Colleges, provided that credit for matriculation subject 5, History and Government of the United States, be included.

Curricula in Public Health.-There are three curricula (see above, under Admission Requirements; see also the curricula in detail, published elsewhere in this bulletin). It will be necessary for candidates for the degree of Graduate in Public Health to select their studies in the lower division (freshman-sophomore years) in such a way as to satisfy the prerequisites for the curriculum selected.

Students in the Technical Course in Architecture must complete all the requirements for the junior certificate in the College of Letters and Science, including among the prescribed or the elective studies: mathematics, 24 units; physics, 9 units; drawing, 16 units; civil engineering, 2 units; architecture, 6 units. The work in mathematics, physics, civil engineering and six units of the work in drawing is identical with the work in these subjects in the colleges of engineering.

THE UPPER DIVISION

COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE

Students will not be registered in the upper division until all matriculation and lower division requirements have been completed.

The amount of work to be completed in the upper division is normally 60 units; but extra credits for the junior certificate may effect a corresponding reduction in the work of the upper division provided the work of the student in the upper division be not reduced to less than 12 units in any half-year. The total number of units required in the University for the bachelor's degree in this college is 124.

The receipt of honorable mention with the junior certificate does not reduce the number of units required of the candidate in the upper division.

The work of the upper division must be extended over a period of not less than two years of residence. Two summer sessions are equivalent in point of residence to one half-year. Study-list limits per half-year in the upper division, 12-16 units; summer session, 4-6 units.

For the regulations governing foreign language requirements for major work and preliminary selection of the major subject see under Junior Certificate in earlier pages of this circular.

Major courses are certain advanced undergraduate courses commonly designated by the numbers 100-199 in the annual Announcement of Courses. Not all upper division courses are major courses.

The departments in which major courses may at present be taken are as follows:

[blocks in formation]

*Not more than twenty-six units of work listed in the professional curriculum in law shall be credited toward a bachelor's degree. The student may enroll for as much more as other regulations permit, but the excess over twenty-six will not be included in his schedule for graduation.

There are required for the degree, the work to be done while the student is in the upper division, 36 units in major courses, in any department or departments listed above, subject to the following limitations:

The student must complete in one department, exclusive of departments numbered 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, in the foregoing list, either:

A group elective of 12 units of major work,

or

A major of 24 units. In certain cases work in allied departments approved by the major department may be counted for the major.

Honors with the bachelor's degree will be conferred only upon students who shall have completed a 24-unit major with distinction; the list of students upon whom honors are conferred, with mention of their major departments, will appear in the annual Commencement programme.

The requirement of a group elective of 12 units or a major of 24 units may be satisfied by completing such portions of the following curricula as fall within the undergraduate division of the College of Letters and Science:

Home Economics: either A (domestic science) or B (domestic art).
Public Health: first two years of curriculum A.

Architecture: first two years of the professional course.
Jurisprudence: first year of the professional course.*

Medicine: first year of the professional course.

Upper division requirements on the old plan.-The programme of upper division work, as herein stated, is compulsory for all students in the College of Letters and Science who are candidates for the degree Bachelor of Arts to be conferred May, 1917, or later. Students who receive the degree A.B. prior to May, 1917, may follow the revised programme as stated herein, or may follow the older plan of upper division work, as announced in the Circular of Information, August, 1914, but the plan of upper division work selected must be completed in its entirety. The revised plan makes no provision for a reduction in the number of units to be taken in the upper division by reason of honorable mention with the junior certificate.

COLLEGE OF COMMERCE

For a statement of the upper division requirements in the College of Commerce, see "College of Commerce," below.

But during the third or junior year in the College of Letters and Science the student will be expected to complete major courses to the amount, normally, of eighteen units.

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

The requirements for admission to the technical course in architecture are the junior certificate in the College of Letters and Science and the following specific courses at the University. Students who expect to follow the technical course in architecture should present matriculation group II for admission. The student should, however, register in the College of Letters and Science and comply with the requirements for the junior certificate. If the course is to be completed in six years, the following prerequisites must be completed in the lower division: Mathematies 3A-3B, 4A-4B; Graphic Art 114A-114B; Drawing 2A-2B; Physics 1A-1B; Civil Engineering 8D; Architecture 5A-5B, 12A-12B, 13A-13B.

NOTE. Students who do not wish to follow the technical curriculum in architecture may choose architecture as a group elective or a major subject in the College of Letters and Science.

COLLEGE OF COMMERCE

UNDERGRADUATE COURSE

Graduation from this college, with the degree of Bachelor of Science, requires the completion of 124 units of college credit. At least two years of residence is required after receiving the junior certificate. The course is largely devoted to elementary and technical studies deemed most appropriate as a broad preparation for business life. While some little specialization is provided for in the senior year, those who wish to prepare for some particular commercial career are advised to extend their course beyond the usual four years. Courses covering five years have been outlined as a preparation for the work of the Certified Public Accountant, of the Actuary, for the Consular Service, and for Railroading. These are described in the special Circular of Information of the College of Commerce. The requirements in units for the junior certificate, including the forty-five units for matriculation, are as follows:
