IOI. A COMPOSITION

The Pygmies

A great while ago, when the world was full of wonders, there lived a giant and a million or more curious little people who were called pygmies. The giant and the pygmies lived together in peace, far away in the middle of Africa.

If one of the pygmies grew to the height of six or eight inches he was thought a very tall man. The streets of their cities were two or three feet wide and were paved with the smallest pebbles. Their houses were about as large as a squirrel's cage. The pygmy workmen plastered them together much like birds' nests, out of straw, feathers, eggshells, and other small bits of stuff.

In the country about, the pygmies planted wheat and other kinds of grain. When the grain grew up it was as much over the heads of these little people as the pines overshadow us. When the grain was ripe the pygmies cut it down with an ax exactly as a woodcutter makes a clearing in the forest.

Their neighbor, the giant, was as big as they were little. He was so tall that he carried a pine tree for a walking stick. The pygmies could hardly see the top of his head without a telescope.

The pygmies had but one thing in the world to trouble them. They were constantly at war with the cranes, and had been ever since the giant could remember. From time to time very terrible battles had been fought in which sometimes the little men won the victory and sometimes the cranes.

When the two parties joined battle the cranes would rush forward, flapping their wings and stretching out their necks. Sometimes a crane would snatch up some of the pygmies in his beak. The little fellows would kick and fight, but at last they always disappeared down the crane's long, crooked throat. If the giant found that the battle was going hard against his little friends he ran with mile-long strides to their assistance. One flourish of his club was enough to make the cranes retreat as fast as they could. Then the pygmy army would march homeward, thinking that it had won the battle.

From The Wonder Book, by NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE (adapted) Description is harder to write than a story, for one event does not suggest the next as in a story. Make as definite an outline as possible, so you will not forget any part. Then write about the pygmies, making your sentences clear and your language simple.

After you have finished, correct your composition, sentence by sentence, in the usual way. Compare your work with the book to see if you have paragraphed correctly. Are your sentences as clear as those in the book? Read your description again, and correct for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
