In asking the question, you will not know whether to use who or what until you have found the subject, so you may say to yourself, Who or what sing? Finding that the answer is Children, you may then say aloud, or write, Who sing? Find the predicates and subjects in the following sentences:

5. ANALYSIS AND THE DIAGRAM

Instead of putting into written words the different steps used in finding the predicate and subject, you may think them to yourself and write the results in what is called a diagram.

MODEL: Plants grow. Say to yourself: "Grow' tells what is done. Therefore, 'grow' is the predicate." Then write on the diagram the predicate. "grow" thus

Dear Mother,

How are you, and father, and John, and are Tabby's kittens' eyes open? I am enjoying every minute of my time here, but I should like to be home for a little while and then fly right back. It is four weeks since I have seen you, or played with Tabby or Nero.

Uncle Jack's cats are so wild I can't catch them. When the men finish milking the cows, they pour some of the milk into big pans and all the cats and kittens come. Soon their heads are out of sight in the pans, leaving only a circle of bodies and tails to be seen. They look so funny, I wish you might see them. On some cold, stormy days the dogs and the cats eat in the house.

Chum, Cousin Frank's dog, is very playful and very useful as well. He drives the cows out every

morning, by himself, and goes after them at night. He almost always brings every one home. If one is missing Uncle Jack says, "Go get her, Chum," and away he runs and brings her in. Chum is very knowing when he drives the cows. When one stops

to eat he runs up and barks at her. If she does n't start right on, he bites her heels.

Please write me soon, and don't forget to tell me about everything, especially Tabby's kittens.

Your loving daughter,
