71. A COMPOSITION

Wonderland

July 18, 1886

Dear Sister,

Have you missed me very much, and are you wondering what could have happened to me? You will not blame me for coming here when you remember I had nothing to do that warm afternoon sitting there on the bank beside you except to peep into your stupid book, which had no pictures or conversation in it.

When White Rabbit came by and took his little watch out of his waistcoat pocket to see the time, I was burning with curiosity, so I followed. I went with him through the rabbit hole, under the hedge, straight through a tunnel, then down, down through a well so deep I thought I should go straight through the earth. But I reached the bottom at last, finding life here very much upside down. Do you think you would like to be part of a fairy tale, with no lessons at all to learn? Would you like to grow very, very large, or very, very small ever so many times a day?

To-day I had such a narrow escape! When I picked up the rabbit's fan I suddenly began to grow smaller and smaller. I dropped it just in time to keep from shrinking away altogether.

I have a mushroom now. When I nibble the least bit from the left side I begin to shrink until I am not more than three inches tall. When I nibble a bit from the other side, I grow so tall that my feet are almost out of sight.

I don't know all the things I used to know. When I begin to say some of the poems, they all go wrong. I tried the multiplication table, but after I said four times five is twelve and four times six

is thirteen I gave it up. But it does n't mattcr

down here.

All the animals talk to me, saying things that I don't in the least understand, but that does n't matter, either. They order me around, too, and I must tell them about the things I did up on the earth.

I do not want to come home until I go through the beautiful gate that unlocks with a golden key.

But send me back a nice long letter by White Rabbit,

who is carrying this to you.

Make the writing fine, for White Rabbit's pocket

is very small.

Your loving sister,

Alice

Pretend that you are Alice's sister or brother, and answer the letter. Make an outline first.

72. A LANGUAGE LESSON

Write sentences showing the difference in meaning between sure and surely, good and well; using two pronouns as object of the preposition with and as object of the verb gave; using a noun and pronoun as object of the preposition to and of the verb hit; showing the difference in meaning between waits on and waits for; using different, followed by the correct preposition; using the following prepositions correctly at the close of sentences: to, at, for, of.

Sometimes children say incorrectly: I ran acrost the room. Say, I ran across the room. I kind of forgot is also incorrect. Say, I forgot. "Kind of" is correctly used in this sentence: I like this kind of candy very much. Write a correct sentence, using "kind of." I like those kind best is also incorrect. Say, instead: I like those kinds best, or I like that kind best. Write sentences, using those kinds and that kind correctly.

Account for the punctuation marks at the close of the sentences in lesson 71 by classifying the sentences as declarative or interrogative, exclamatory or non-exclamatory.

73. USE OF WORDS IN THE SENTENCE

a. Tell the number of the nouns and the pronouns in italics, and the use of each in the sentence.

MODEL: Many beautiful fairies do kind deeds. "Fairies" is a noun, plural number, subject of the verb "do."

1. Many beautiful fairies do kind deeds.

2. You play with us.

3. I raised my hand.

4. The women built a new clubhouse.
5. We visited in a Japanese home.

6. The deer scattered in many directions.

7. I take a teaspoonful of this medicine in the morn

ing.

b. Select the adjectives (14) and tell the use of each in the sentence.

MODEL: Many beautiful fairies do kind deeds. "Beautiful" is an adjective modifying the noun "fairies." "Beautiful" tells what kind of fairies.

c. In the same way, select the prepositional phrases and tell the use of each in the sentence.

74. VERBS AND THEIR SUBJECTS

Read the following sentences, finding the change made in each verb when the subject is changed from the plural number to the singular number.

PLURAL

Frogs swim.

Boys ride horses.
They run fast.

They sew nicely.
They hurt us.

SINGULAR
A frog swims.

A boy rides horses.
He runs fast.

She sews nicely.
It hurts us.

In the preceding sentences, when the subject is changed from the plural to the singular number, is added to each verb.

Read these sentences, finding what change is made in the verb when the number of the subject is changed from plural to singular:

PLURAL

Boys go to school.
Girls wish for vacation.
Farmers finish plowing.
They dress themselves.
They dash away.

They do very well.

SINGULAR

A boy goes to school.

A girl wishes for vacation.
A farmer finishes plowing.
She dresses herself.

He dashes away.

It does very well.

In the sentences above, what letters are added to the verb to show that the subject is singular?

Read the following sentences. Notice the change in the form of the verb when the number of the subject changes.

PLURAL

Boys have marbles.
They have tops.

They have dolls.

They are here.
They are going.

They are mine.

SINGULAR

A boy has marbles.

He has tops.
She has a doll.
He is here.

She is going.

It is mine.

In the sentences above the form of the verb is changed when the subject changes from plural to singular.

There are two pronoun subjects that change from plural to singular without any change in the predicate. From the following sentences, find the exception to this rule.
