(San Pedro). Many visitors will very likely have their tickets made to include all or part of this river and ocean trip, which will prove a delightful diversion from the long rail ride across the continent.

Twelve scenic excursions to Alaska may be taken advantage of by visitors to the N. E. A. Convention at San Francisco. These trips will be via the inside passage to Skagway through smooth waters protected by great islands from the ocean swell. The voyage is like journeying up a great river. Protected from seasickness, one enjoys all the advantages of an ocean voyage without its discomforts.

Alaska is the wonderland of the West. These excursions visit all the greatest glaciers in the world, big rivers of solid moving ice, casting loose giant icebergs into smooth ocean water. There are snow-capped mountains, waterfalls and cascades, fiords, inlets, bays and all the charming sea-scapes of the inside passage! There are forests of unbelievable extent and beauty stretcbing back from the waters edge through every valley and in every direction.

The round trip from Seattle takes eleven days and berth and meals are included in the fare. The round trip of $66.00 means an expense of only about $6.00 a day. This is an opportunity to see Alaska as cheaply as staying at home, as there are practically no expenses outside of the round trip fare.

Descriptive folders may be obtained upon application to C. D. Dunann, G. P. A., Pacific Coast SS. Co., 112 Market 8t., San Francisco.

Visitors to the N. E. A. Convention at San Francisco will be given the choice of having their railroad tickets read by the various routes and may go and return through entirely different sections of the country. A great proportion of those attending will either go or return through Southern California, and a brief description of one of the many delightful side trips from Los Angeles will be of interest.

Probably the best known of these trips is to Santa Catalina Island, reached in about three hours from Los Angeles, by trolley to Los Angeles Harbor (San Pedro) and steamer thence. Avalon, the resort town of the Island, supports numberless hotels and the Canvas City, where tent life is at its best, has accommodations for about 2000 people. The world-famous Marine Gardens, seen through glass bottom boats, are a sight worth a trip across the country. At Catalina the art of sea angling has reach its best and to win one of the buttons of the Tuna Club is an honor of which to be proud. One can find no more charming place at wbich to stop for a few days rest, but if you have no time for rest by alt means make the one day trip. Southern Teachers'

NEIGHBORHOOD CAR PARTIES FOR SAN FRANCISCO. Supt. Jas. A. Barr, of Stockton, California, is making an effort to organize a “ Pullman or Tourist Car Party" for the San Francisco Convention in practically every city in the United States. He has sent out personal and circular letters outlining the plan to some 1,500 active school workers representing every state. The plan is very practical and has met with a ready response.

SEE THE PACIFIC OCEAN. The greatest scenic attraction of the West is the Pacific Ocean. Every tourist, it may safely be said, who comes to the far West, sooner or later makes the pilgrimage to the beach of the greatest of all oceans. The West is rich in wonderful and attractive features. Alaska, Yellowstone Park, Yosemite Valley and Grand Canyon. Who has not felt the impulse to visit these! And yet all are moved to see the great western ocean. A new feature in railroad ticketing, is that round trip tickets to San Francisco or Los Angeles, may be routed if desired, via coastwise steamers between these points, or between San Francisco and Seattle in either direction. Where tickets are routed via the steamship line, berths and meals are included in the fare, a saving which should be taken into account. The coastwise steamship companies from San Francisco all have very low round trips including berth and meals to various coast ports.

THE GOLDEN GATE. When visiting San Francisco, an excellent view may be had of the Golden Gate from Land's End near the Cliff House, reached by the Sutter St. car lines. A good view of this wonderful entrance to San Francisco may also be had from the Berkeley campus, or from the decks of the ferry boats plying between San Francisco and Sausalito or from the steamers of the Monticello SS. Co. plying between San Francisco and Vallejo.

But in order to really appreciate this wonderful gateway, one must make a short voyage travelling on one of the large coastwise steamers through the Golden Gate itself. On one side are the giant guns and fortifications of Ft. Baker, and the precipitous cliffs of the Marin County shore. On the other, Ft. Winfield Scott, the Presidio, the Cliff House, Seal Rocks and Golden Gate Park. No one can say that he has fully seen the Golden Gate until he has really entered through or departed via its portals.
