FIFTEEN years have elapsed since the last edition of this work appeared, during which time there have been numerous decisions relating to the subject dealt with. In the present edition it has been thought desirable, whilst retaining for the most part the original arrangement, to thoroughly revise the whole work, and to entirely re-write some portions of it. A large amount of new matter has been introduced, but it has been found possible to do this, and also to enlarge the Index, without increasing the size of the book, a great deal of what was obsolete or unnecessary in the last edition having been omitted. The enlarged Index will, it is hoped, render reference to the text easier, and add to the usefulness of the present edition. I have been greatly assisted by Mr. J. M. Paterson and Mr. Sydney Williams in the preparation of this edition. The chapter on Patents, which has been entirely re-written, and the extensive alterations in the chapters on Copyright and Trade-marks are practically the work of Mr. Williams, who kindly took this labour off my hands.
