Course in Chemical Engineering: Students in the College of Chemistry who wish to specialize in Chemical Engineering must take all the prescribed courses in the College of Chemistry and will be expected to choose their electives in substantial accordance with the following schedule:

CURRICULUM FOR NURSES

In November, 1917, the Academic Senate established a curriculum for the training of nurses and appointed a committee to administer the curriculum. This committee has issued the following:

OUTLINE OF A UNIVERSITY COURSE PRELIMINARY TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA TRAINING SCHOOL FOR NURSES

The demand at the present time for professionally trained nurses greatly exceeds the supply. The need for well educated and adequately trained women to fill important positions in hospitals and training schools and to carry forward new methods in public health, child welfare, and social service work will not cease with the termination of the war. To meet both the present emergency and the permanent need of the future, the University of California has arranged through its academic departments and the University Hospital Training School, a five-year course for the training of nurses.

The plan provides for the completion of two years' work in the lower division leading to the junior certificate and a third year in Berkeley, followed by two years of professional training in the University of California Hospital. The degree of Bachelor of Science will be granted at the completion of the five-year course. The State Board of Health has formally approved this five-year course as meeting in full the requirements of the Nurses' Registration Act for an accredited training school. The State Board has also voted that any student who completes a regular collegiate course in the University of California leading to a bachelor's degree and who receives two additional years of training in the University of California Hospital, be likewise recognized as having met the full requirements of the Nurses' Registration Act.

However, admission to the Hospital Training School will depend upon the student's qualifications and previous training as well as upon the capacity of the hospital to care for its students.

Candidates for admission to the Hospital School are required to present a satisfactory certificate of health from the University Physician.

The following table presents a typical schedule of courses covering the three years of work in Berkeley.

UNITS FOR JUNIOR CERTIFICATE, INCLUDING MATRICULATION

(Matriculation 45 plus Lower Division 64 = 109)

Matriculation Group I, including chemistry, required. For detailed information concerning Group I, see Admission Requirements in earlier pages of this circular.

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

The requirements for admission to the technical course in architecture are the junior certificate in the College of Letters and Science and the following specific courses at the University. Students who expect to follow the technical course in architecture should present matriculation group II for admission. The student should, however, register in the College of Letters and Science and comply with the requirements for the junior certificate. If the course is to be completed in six years, the following prerequisites must be completed in the lower division: Mathematics 3A-3B, 4A-4B; Graphic Art 14A-14B; Drawing 3A, 3B, 3c; Physics 1A-1B; Civil Engineering 8; Architecture 5A-5B, 11, 12A-12в, 13A-13b.

NOTE.-Students who do not wish to follow the technical curriculum in architecture may choose architecture as a major subject in the College of Letters and Science.

(Due to the establishment at the University of a unit of the Students' Army Training Corps, the curriculum announced below is subject to revision for the year 1918–19.)

The requirement for entrance to the School of Architecture (as distinguished from the Department of Architecture) is the A.B. degree with a major in Architecture or the equivalent of this. The degree of Graduate in Architecture is conferred upon students in the School of Architecture who shall have remained in residence at least one year after obtaining the A.B. degree and who shall have satisfactorily completed the following courses of study:

[ocr errors]

Architecture 5ABCDEF, 11, 12AB (six half-years), 13AB (three half-
years), 14AB (four half-years), 101AB, 102AB, 105CDEF, 106ABCD,
108AB, 203AB, 206EF, 207AB, 209AB, 204, 216.

Civil Engineering 1E, 8, 107EF, 108F, 115, 116, 117, 118AB, 127.
Drawing 3ABC, 105, 110; Graphic Art 114AB.

To obtain the degree of Graduate in Architecture in the shortest possible time, students will find it necessary to anticipate the required studies as much as possible before obtaining the A.B. degree.

The division of the classes in Architectural Design is based upon a system of progressive values, instead of half-years, as follows:

Stage I-(Architecture 101A, Elementary Design) 3 projets during the half-year,
