THE LAW HALL FUND

WHAT IT IS ITS SUPPORTERS-ITS MANAGEMENT

One of the interesting enterprises of the College of Law, always to the front in University activities, is the raising of a Law Hall Fund by voluntary subscriptions. Its fruition will be seen in 1919-1920.

What is it? A fund, contributed by philanthropic, public-minded citizens for the erection of a Law Hall for the purpose of providing a suitable building for the use of the alumni, the faculty and the students of the College of Law of the University of the Philippines, as a means of promoting esprit de corps among them and study, recreation and association. It is proposed to erect this building on or near the University campus so as to be readily accessible to every student and, in fact to every one interested in University activities, as graduates of other great universities of the world and their friends, liberally minded men have done.

On the initiation of the Law Alumni Association requests for subscriptions have met with ready response. We have the pleasure of recording:

PAID UP: Felipe Ysmael '17, P200; José A. Espíritu, '13, P100; total, 300. TO BE PAID JANUARY, 1919 OR BEFORE: Chief Justice Arellano P500; Mr. Justice Malcolm, P500; Dean Jorge Bocobo, P200; total, P1,200.

CLASS OF 1914: Hon. Pablo Lorenzo, P100; Ricardo C. Lacson, P100; H. Lawrence Noble, P100; Alexander Reyes, P100; José Yulo, P100; total, P500.

CLASS OF 1915: Antonio Cuyugan, P100; Cecilio Esquivel, P100; Javier Gonzalez, P100; Juan Luna, P100; Carlos Tan, P100; Marceliano Montemayor, P100; Victoriano Yamzon, P200 and one year's salary in the University, about P500; total, P1,300.

CLASS OF 1917: Lorenzo C. Campo, P100; José A. Ledesma, P100; Felicísimo Oboza, P100; Exequiel M. Santos, P100; Jesus de la Rama, P150; Sidney C. Schwarzkopf, P100; José Moreno, P100; Gavino Yap-Chiongco, P100; Agustin Y. Kintaner, P100; Pedro Y. Ylagan, P100; total, P1,050.

Thus we have to date a grand total of P6,300 subscribed, P300 of which has been paid in. Who among our friends will furnish further impetus?

The depository of the Funds is the Philippine National Bank. Professor H. Lawrence Noble is Trustee for the Law Hall Fund Committee and Mr. Pedro Y. Ylagan is Secretary. Requests for information will be gladly furnished by either of these officials and subscriptions may be sent to them.

The building should be in keeping with the artistic structures now erected and those to be put up on the University grounds. It is the intention to reward the liberality of the Legislature in making appropriations for the new Rizal Hall and other edifices by showing what individual private effort can accomplish. To paraphrase the Holy Writings of old-"Come over to the University and help us!"

JOINT MEETING OF THE PHILIPPINE BARRISTERS

AND THE JUNIOR PHILIPPINE ASSEMBLY

The crowd that gathered at the Normal School Auditorium on the evening of Saturday, January 26, witnessed Miss Alejandrina Santiago, the only female student of the College of Law, pleading for the respondents in a petition for adoption. It was on the occasion of the Joint Meeting of the Philippine Barristers and the Junior Philippine Assembly. All the numbers of the program were rendered with general applause. The main event, however, was the trial in which the attorneys displayed the utmost of their ability as evidenced by the strong, convincing arguments presented on both sides.

CARNIVAL PARADE

The local newspapers have commented upon the participation of the University Cadets in the Carnival parade. It was there that the students of the College of Law taking the military science course, showed that they are not "señoritas" by joining the company, at the right time and the right place.

MASS MEETING

When it comes to showing University spirit, the students of the College of Law are always to the front. At the mass meeting held last Friday, February 15, at 8:30 p.m. for the purpose of passing a resolution of gratitude to the Philippine Legislature for the appropriations it has made for the University, a considerable number of law students, in spite of the fact that they were tired and hungry (the classes ended at 8:30), joined the mass meeting and took an active part in the affair. After the address of the Varsity News editor, Carlos P. Romulo, Simon R. Cruz, a senior in the College of Law, introduced the resolution of gratitude which was unanimously approved.

TRIAL IN SPANISH

A public trial conducted in Spanish was held in the University Hall, Thursday night, February 21. It was a criminal case in which the defendant was charged of the crime of frustrated murder.

The case is a complicated one and it is pleasant to state that the attorneys on both sides not only presented strong arguments in support of their respective contentions but also expressed them so well that it seemed as if they have always spoken the Spanish tongue.

The attorneys were: Eugenio Angeles and Felix Bautista for the prosecution; Ramón San José and José Paredes for the defense. Emilio Javier acted as judge; all the participants are seniors.

JUNIORS HONOR SENIORS

Saturday evening, February the 23rd, was a grand night for the Seniors and the Juniors. The reception and dance given by the latter in honor of the former proved to be a real success. At eight o'clock sharp the "Orquesta Ilaya" began to play in that attractive and delightful manner which is its characteristic. The reception followed with Dean Bocobo, Mrs. Alma Burton, Mrs. De Joya, and Simon Cruz of the senior class forming the reception line.. After the reception, dancing was indulged in. Members of the Faculty participated in the affair. There were many pretty, amiable girls; everything was delicious (the orchestra, the lunch and service). In one word, it was a grand success.
