GOOD REPORTS ABOUT THE ALUMNI

There seems to be a tendency to fill up the positions of Justices of the Peace and Law Clerks in the Department of Mindanao and Sulu with the graduates of the College of Law. At present there are quite a number of alumni employed in that Department. From the several letters received in the office of the Dean of the College of Law from Mr. Ponciano Reyes, the active Department Secretary, we learn that our fellow alumni serving under him are doing splendid work. Secretary Reyes is continually calling for more College of Law graduates for the purpose of filling up all available positions in his Department which require legal training. We can not think of any better opportunity for the graduates of the College of Law to show their real patriotism and their love for social service than to go to Mindanao and Sulu and administer justice to our people down there.

LAW HALL

At the smoker given in honor of the alumni by Mr. Justice Malcolm while still the Dean of the College of Law, sometime in February of this year, the question of celebrating the 10th anniversary of the College of Law was discussed by the alumni present on that occasion. It was decided to celebrate this event and give an appropriate program by erecting a building to be called "Law Hall" in the University Campus in connection with its dedication. The members present agreed to subscribe for the funds to be raised for this purpose and the minimum amount agreed to be subscribed by each alumnus for this purpose is P100. list of those who have subscribed or agreed to subscribe:

In the College of Law nowadays, military training is no joke. The new rules provide that every able-bodied student shall take the military science course for at least two years as an indispensable requisite for graduation. Employees are exempted; seniors constitute the reserve. If you ever go to the University campus on Wednesday or Saturday at 11:00 a. m. you will see the would-be lawyers drilling with the best will in the world. There is only one thing they find objectionable. It's too hot!

THE MONDAY MENTOR

Have you read the Monday Mentor? It is a sheet of good advice to students prepared by Dean Bocobo and posted on the bulletin board every Monday morning, there to remain the whole week. It has met with the approval of President Villamor, who wrote a letter congratulating Dean Bocobo. These admonitions are being published in the "Varsity News."

THE VARSITY NEWS

On Aug. 2, 1917, The Varsity News, a triweekly paper intended to be the official organ of the students of the University, made its first bow to the public.

President Villamor has said: "Among the important events in the history of the University of the Philippines the publication of the Varsity News should be recorded."

Our College pledged its unconditional support to this paper and the Student Council passed a resolution urging all students to subscribe to it.

CASE CONDUCTED IN SPANISH

On Saturday, Aug. 4, the Moot Court tried a case in Spanish-the first one conducted in that tongue. Messrs. Hilado and Bautista acted as attorneys for the plaintiff, while the defendant was represented by Messrs. Angeles and Albert. City Fiscal Díaz presided. This is a reform introduced by Dean Bocobo because of the long-felt need that graduates of the College of Law should know how to argue before a Spanish-speaking judge.

COLLEGE EVENTS

The Student Council has decided that the following shall be the permanent events for the present school-year:

OPEN MEETING OF THE PHILIPPINE BARRISTERS

With the attendance of an audience that completely filled the Assembly Hall, the Philippine Barristers held its open meeting at 8:00 P. M. on Occupation Day. The presence of young ladies from the Wilson and Normal Halls and the Nurses' Dormitory contributed to the attraction and lustre of the occasion.
