A long intimacy renders unnecessary, and even ridiculous, much of that ceremony the observance of which is decorous on a first acquaintance. The formal bow and enquiry give way to the familiar nod and “how do you do?"! and a recurrence to the former is at length looked upon rather as a symptom of declining friendship, than as a proof of politeness. The Editor of the Pocket Magazine flatters himself that he is justified in now considering his readers as established friends; and it is, therefore, not necessary for him to say much on the close of his third volume. He will merely assure them, that he is no less grateful for their kindness than anxious to deserve the continuance of it.
For the fourth volume the Editor is promised several articles, and has others in preparation, which it is hoped will afford considerable amusement to the readers of the Magazine.
By the Publisher, who is responsible for all the mechanical portion of the work, he is requested to apologize for the plates not having been regularly given in some of the recent
