الليال سر

Sirr ul layâli. The mysteries of the nights. By Farîs as Shidyâq. Large 4to. pp. 609. Close, but neat type, at the Imperial Ottoman Press. Tunis, A.H. 1284 (1867). £2 10s.

This is an elaborate investigation into the general vocabulary of the Arabic language, and seeks, in the inversion or permutation of two radicals in a word, its relation with its congeners, and the development of new roots from a primary one. In addition to the author's well known recondite learning in his native literature, he lived long in Europe, has acquired some of our languages, and may have de rived some new light from our linguistic science.

Professor Târânâtha Tarkavâchaspati, who is so well known to all students of Sanskrit for his profound knowledge of the ancient literature of his country and for his services to philology, is at present engaged, under the auspices of the Government of Bengal, in the compilation of a comprehensive Sanskrit Dictionary. But as considerable time will necessarily elapse before his great work is published, I requested him to undertake the compilation of a smaller dictionary for the use of colleges and schools in India. He has, accordingly, with his usual energy and untiring literary industry, commenced this useful work, which he will publish in five parts.
