his interpretation of a "Benediction" as it should be rendered and he cleverly handled a very hard task set before him. After much dissension this lone brother retired and his colleagues continued the program set for the evening. One might misjudge the type of party or banquet Beta had given in memory of its founding but it is to be understood that such was not the case. The early toast caused the trouble for those above mentioned and aside from that the party was up to all standards set by the university authorities.

The grand finale was brought about when Brother Hageman decided to take Lieutenant McCartney and Bitler home. This he did and according to reports our dear brother almost fell in love with a fair one who, at the hotel where the lieutenants stayed, flirted with him. George, who is not easily tempted, almost fell for a pair of naughty eyes but as he remembered his motto, "Let your conscience be your guide," he did an about face and strolled, whistling all the way, homeward. At twelve o'clock all was quiet with the exception of that certain brother who belongs to the "Yaw Yoint" Tribe. This brother insisted on enforcing corrections upon Bill in regard to his conduct toward Brother Klingman. Gradually the kidding was discontinued, but some of the boys answered roll call in another room rehashing the past evening. Almost every one was present and Bill again was the chief center of attraction. Jimmy in his sleep, yelled for his roommates to cover him with a bathrobe which they did and he went quietly into a deep sleep.

At one o'clock all was absolutely quiet. Beta's efforts were a thing of the past and Morpheus had passed his wand over every member of the chapter. The celebration was a great one. It brought out many new actors who can be of future use to our chapter. Some are good and their work is clever, while against this good discovery is the fact that some are poor even to that ad nauseam state. Beta and her guests will ever remember this celebration. As it started in a most gorgeous style, so it finished. Never once did the events of the evening wane. At each moment was there a busy actor and at no moment was anything left undone. Beta truly tried her best to commemorate the founding of our order. No gathering ever ended with the same spirit as did this one and all present voted this as the "best ever." Truly it was a grand celebration, nobly had the committee done, and splendidly did each react to the occasion presented him.

Long live the glory of Phi Beta Pi. Oh! for another such opportunity to make sacred our anniversary as we did on March 9, 1918. Beta expresses herself by her events and activities and wishes long prosperity to this great organization and longs for the success of her sister chapters. Long live the glory of our order.

THE CONVENTION

T IS impossible to have a complete report of the convention in this issue. A short sketch will have to suffice until the next issue. The convention was held at Hotel Muehleback, Kansas City, Missouri, May 1, 2, and 3. Supreme Archon Holston was not present at the convention due to a recent severe illness. In his absence the convention was called to order by Supreme Vice-archon Turnacliff who presided throughout the session. Following the opening of the convention the delegates were welcomed by Dr. W. A. Shelton of the Kansas City Alumni Association. The Fraternity service flag was then presented by Dr. Jabez Jackson (of Nu Chapter) who is a member of the Medical Advisory Board. We at present have over 1,100 men that are known to be in service. There are doubtless many others. It was decided by the convention to send THE QUARTERLY to every man in service and to the various Y. M. C. A. and K. C. reading-rooms. After the morning session the delegates were treated to a motor ride over the Kansas City boulevard and the picture of the delegates taken at 31st and Gilliam Road. The evening was given over to a smoker at the Muehlebach. "A large time was had by all." The second day of the convention was given over to business until four P. M. at which time the delegates left on a special car for Lawrence, Kansas, where Alpha Nu Chapter and the University of Kansas is located. The delegates were shown the university buildings and that evening were entertained by Alpha Nu with an elaborate dinner dance. The fairest of the Kansas coeds were drafted for the occasion and it is said that a number of the boys had a tachycardia lasting far into the following day. Dr. Turnacliff in particular was affected as Ye Editor who shared a room with him can testify. To partially compensate the fair young lady from Oklahoma upon whose toes he tread the entire sixteen dances he insisted, the following day, upon sending her a large box of forget-me-nots (or maybe it was roses) from Kansas City's leading florists. Dave Long went to the dance protesting that he was old and rheumatic and couldn't dance, and the next day was insisting that one dance was not enough. We think that the fact that two tough old birds like the two mentioned were so affected is sufficient proof that the dance was most successful to say the least. The crowd returned to Kansas City on a special car arriving about two A. M. albeit somewhat seasick from the rocking of the inter-ruben. The third day's business convention was closed at three o'clock with the election of officers. Following the session there was a motor trip of inspection of the Kansas University Medical School at Rosedale, Kansas, and various Kansas City hospitals. That evening the convention was closed by an elaborate banquet at the Muehlebach. David S. Long acted as toastmaster. Over 125 brothers were present. An elaborate musical program, an orchestra, a Hawaiian quartet and dancer, a cabaret singer, and last but not least, "Honey," Alpha Nu's musical house boy. The banquet was followed by

speeches by Dr. Buford Hamilton of Kansas City, Dr. W. A. Fansler of Minneapolis, Dr. B. B. Beeson of Chicago, Dr. H. Hammes of St. Paul, Dr. Lawson G. Lowrey of Boston, Dr. W. A. Shelton, Dr. Sam E. Roberts, Dr. Eugene Hamilton, and Dr. S. S. Glasscock of Kansas City, and Melvin Hereford of Alpha Nu.

The two most important affairs transacted by the convention were the provision for province convention to be held in alternate years with the National Convention and the provision for the formation of alumni associations. The following officers were elected: Supreme Archon, David S. Long, Harrisonville, Missouri; Supreme Vice-archon, D. D. Turnacliff, St. Paul (reëlected); Supreme Secretary-Treasurer, L. G. Lowrey, Boston; Supreme Editor, W. A. Fansler, Minneapolis (reëlected); Supreme Eastern Praetor, Edward Weiss, Pittsburgh; Supreme Northern Praetor, B. B. Beeson, Chicago (reëlected); Supreme Southern Praetor, A. C. Hirshfield, Oklahoma City; Supreme Central Praetor, B. B. Berger, Kansas City; Supreme Western Praetor, F. R. Makinson, Oakland, Cal. And now about the ladies, God bless 'em, they were few in number but great in spirit-Mrs. Long, Mrs. Hammes, and Mrs. Makinson. We hope that next convention they may all be present and many more like them.
