LITTLE SKETCHES OF BIG PHI BETAS

DR. RUBE M. STRONG

MONG the leaders in scientific research in this country today there is probably none more widely known than our own Rube M. Strong. As author of numerous articles pertaining to his research in anatomy, heredity, and neurology he has attained national prominence. Dr. Strong has taught and studied in all parts of this country and Germany.

Dr. Strong was born in West Allis, Wisconsin. After his graduation from high school he took his A.B. degree from Oberlin College. He pursued his professional work at Harvard University and received from this university the degrees of M.A. and Ph.D. Later he was made a member of the faculty at the University of Chicago and served in this capacity for ten years.

In 1903-4 Dr. Strong served as Carnegie research assistant. In 1909 he was investigator at Senckenbergische Neuroligoche Institute, Frankfort, Germany. He is a member of various scientific societies, including the American Association of Anatomists. Dr. Strong was elected in 1916 to act for three years as a member of the executive committee of the American Association of Anatomists. He is also a Fellow of the American Association of Advancement of Science.

Deciding to give his services to the South and for the reason that the South offered new fields of study, Dr. Strong came to the University of Mississippi in 1914 as professor of anatomy and remained at this college until the fall of 1916 when he became a member of the Anatomy Department of Vanderbilt University. Dr. Strong is professor of neurology, embryology, and histology. As an evidence of Dr. Strong's attainments, the American Men of Science rates him among the first one thousand of American scientific men.

On the evening of February 7, 1918, the Rho Chapter of Vanderbilt initiated Dr. Strong into the mysteries of Phi Beta Pi. As he stated after the initiation that he was indeed proud to be numbered among the wearers of the skull and pelvis, so can we also say that we take a just pride in claiming Dr. Strong as one of our brotherhood. He is a most valuable addition to our list of great Phi Betas.

HORACE C. GAYDEN.
