ALPHA

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH, PITTSBURGH, PA.

WONDER if letters about this time of

the year are not abbreviated by the ominous shadow of examinations even though they are a little on ahead. At Alpha the boys are tuning up for the final pull and are getting on famously.

We have a chapter dance scheduled for the first of the month which promises to be quite a society event. We are right there on the society stuff when we take the time off for it. The annual banquet is also billed for early in May, the committee keeping us in delicious suspense as to the date. Also and in addition we are getting our new kicks shined up for a house-warming soon. All these though do not keep us from worrying the lads in the classes who have the "honors" bee in their bonnet. Traugh, one of our newer brothers came through with three ninety-fives last mid-year and so with Wheeler to lead the sophs and Traugh the juniors, with the fresh yet to hear from, we still can expand the chest on occasion. We hear that this is to be the last summer we get summer loafs and I haven't yet heard a yell from the student body for that decision. Really things do look a little too urgent "Over There" to stay off the job from June 1 until the middle of October. Some of the boys have the farm in mind, but on the quiet the most of us could not locate the mammae on a cow. Shipbuilding is more quiet, like the dissecting room or clinic.

A new plan here for next year is to complete the junior lectures in surgery by the holidays, 1918, and then the rest of the year will

go to clinical clerkships. It looks feasible and should improve the work next year. Dr. Sheldon of the Department of Anatomy has been commissioned by the government to do the bulk of the neurological sections and other technic. We feel here that the honor has come to the most competent man in the country. There are increasing hundreds of the soldier boys coming to this section for ground school work in aviation, in the Ordnance Corps, and other branches. It seems particularly appropriate that the old home of Langley should be doing so much of the aviation work now.

Finals start May 27 and we are up on the bit now. The fortunate delegate to the national convention is mighty glad that it suited the chapter here and the majority elsewhere to hold it in June rather than in May as it means that you lose ten days the week or so before the finals when one couldn't rest very comfortably.

Yours for a good summer

Beta boys are themselves once again. Beta is fortunate in having many new pledges and by the third Saturday in April we will have at least six more active members. Therefore, we are fortunate in having a splendid outlook for the coming year.

Again we are fortunate in our interne appointments at the University Hospital for the coming year. Baumy is placed in surgery; Lundgrew in Otolaryngology; Badgley in ophthalmology making a good representation in type of men Beta produces. Many rumors concerning the engagement of the foremost above mentioned have been circulated but both sides so concerned have denied the fact. Recently Brother Hageman received a letter from Brother Kennedy, lieutenant, U. S. N. The letter was very interesting and related many facts. Brother Kennedy reported how he was an eyewitness to the sinking of the Tuscania and also related their experience of lowering life-boats to the unfortunate ones. Brother Kennedy, by the way, is on an oil tanker which accompanies the transports across the ocean. According to the letter, the oil tanker was forced to go ahead without stopping, the reasons for the same Brother being stricken out by the censor.

Holtom, also a lieutenant, U. S. N., stopped over at the house for a few days and Mrs. Holtom accompanied him. Both appeared the same as we have known them to be for years. "Ben" and "Del," as we know them, were married about five months before Beta even thought of their marriage and it was a treat to see the bashful couple stand up under the cross examination given by the boys. They, too, enjoyed it and "Del" could say only "Oh Ben," and "Ben" replied in a paraphastic manner. The chapter took a brace in social affairs recently and the whole crowd, thirty-six strong including the chaperons, blossomed out at a dance at the Packard. Of course, the girls went with us and it was a typical Beta party except the punch which lacked the "kick" as a few of the girls remarked. It was by far the most successful party of the year and yet the most informal one due to the splendid cooperation of the committee and the members

in general. We were fortunate in having Brother Benedict of the Mayo Clinic as one of our chaperons. How the younger ones did make Bill dance, and Mrs. Bill well, she too had a glorious time. The music was all everyone could wish for and the verdict, "best ever" was given at the close of the affair. Owing to strict censorship Brother Foss restricted the writer, an underclassman, from disclosing the secret of his new profession. By common agreement, all parties concerned yielded to the modest, unassuming, yet assertive, manner

of the upperclassman.

Later developments, however, may announce the good news to THE QUARTERLY readers. The chapter did not forget our anniversary on March 10, 1918, and the previous day we celebrated in honor of Phi Beta Pi by giving a banquet at the chapter-house. Again, we were fortunate in having Brothers McCartney and Bitler of Chicago and Indiana, respectively, in our midst. These brothers are connected as lieutenants with the Psychiatry Unit at the University Hospital. The banquet was a marked success and ended at a respectable hour. Due to some unknown influence, for which Brother Burr is directly responsible, a few of the silent ones, as Futch, Coxon, Pierce, and the like, made their début and extended the Yes boys, we remember how program. "Hag" reduced the lieutenants, McCartney and Bitler, to major, sergeant, and corporals "Hag" during the course of the evening.

finally escorted "Mac" and "Bit" home, but from reports nearly lost his good standing to a fair one who gave him the wink at the hotel where the lieutenants lived. "Will power," exclaimed Hag, "saved me."

During the course of the evening Bill and Kling had a wonderful time and again Bill and Bill versus Kling offered much to talk about. The entire party procedings will appear in a separate form later on and the brothers can find just how Beta does celebrate her mother's anniversary. Again I may mention the fact that Beta has taken a most active interest in the War Saving-Thrift proposition and each member is doing his share to help the best known cause along. Lest I might forget, I shall say here that "Octy"

Furstenburg really attended the dance at the Packard on January 23, 1918. With much persuasion, the fair blonde one made an appearance at ten-thirty and how he did enjoy that dance. "How's that?" the old expression of the Doctor's, was working overtime when conversing with the fair ones.

Just two weeks remain until we shall depart for our homes to spend an Easter vacation. Each brother is anxiously awaiting the first bell announcing the time of departure. Before closing may I announce the newly elected officers of Beta Chapter for the coming semester: Badgley, archon; Anderson, vice-archon; Beinhauer, secretary; Corcoran, honored guardian; Futch, chaplain; and Hageman, librarian.

In closing I may say Beta is fortunate in having a full roster and a bright future for the coming year. May all the chapters bear the burden of the times successfully. Beta hopes to meet all chapters at our convention in Kansas City through her representative and convey glad tidings to all chapters present.

Fraternally,

L. G. BEINHAUER.

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, CHICAGO, ILL. Chapter-house, 323 S. Ashland Blvd.

ELTA Alumni, attention! Spring, in all its glory, has arrived. Aunt Cad is serving that wonderful strawberry shortcake. And, oh yes! we most forgot to mention that the Delta cat had four kittens. For further particulars inquire of the chief obstetrician, Amos Buchanan, or his assistant, Phillip Whitely. We regret they did not receive credit as it was reported a "precipitate."

Life in Delta Chapter has returned to normal, and the haggard worn expression on the brothers faces has changed to one of extreme happiness, as the winter quarter "con" slips and the county results have been handed out. Yes Willie Earl Kiley slipped one past the "Duke," and "Funny face" evidently fell for Nick's line of "bull," as our boys came

through with flying colors, not one receiving a "con" or a 66 flunk." Most important of all we placed three men, Brothers Tihen, Simpkins, and Callender in the County, Bro. Henry Tihen making seventh place. We are glad to note that a Phi Beta from Northwestern, Brother Bernstorf, placed first. Congratulations, Theta.

Brother Callander is now acting as assistant surgeon at the Culver Military Academy until he goes into the "County." Brother Simp

kin is at the Gary Work Hospital. Brothers Dundon, Flinn, and Flinn are interning at the Cincinnati General Hospital. Brothers Henken and West are at St. Luke's.

Although six men from the house graduated last quarter, at the present time their places are taken and the house is filled.

Where is your Liberty Bond? Delta Chapter at the last meeting voted to raise by popular subscription enough money to buy two bonds. The money from these is to be used for the furniture fund. The chapter also voted to take enough money from the treasury and place with the sum from the alumni fund to buy about $800 worth of bonds.

At the present time individual subscriptions are being solicited in the chapter, and so far, so good.

Lieutenants Berkheiser and Saari, Delta alumni, are with us for a few weeks while doing some special work at Northwestern Medical College.

King Barnard and Crown Prince Foord report that the spring drive is progressing favorably. They have gone "Over the Top" into "No Man's Land" many times. Why do they call him "King''?

Bros. Bill Kiley, "Farmer Joe" Benton, and "Blondie" O'Bannon have moved into the house.

On Wednesday evening, April 17, the boys assembled in the "ballroom" to listen to a very interesting speech delivered by Brother O'Bannon on the subject of his recent important research work, dealing with the constipated fish of Oklahoma.

Brother Whitley is at present doing some special work at the Durand Hospital.
