The above cut shows the shipping slips for shipments from the State Library in the years 1909, 1910, 1911, and 1912. The very decided increase in the number of loans in 1911 as compared with 1910 is due, of course, to the starting of so many county free libraries in that year. The fact that 1912 does not show a corresponding increase over 1911 is due, without doubt, to the decrease in the State Library fund, which prevented the usual additions of new books. So that the figures for circulation may be uniform, current magazines are included in the total whether reported that way or not. The annual incomes as quoted for the free public libraries are computed when possible from the city clerks' reports sent to the State Controller's office, and are based on the assessed valuation of nonoperative property. Blanks for January, February and March statistics were sent to all of the libraries in March.
