Prescribed at the end of the Junior year for all students in the College of Civil Engineering, railroad course, who have completed Course Civil Engineering 3A and Course Astronomy 2B. The work must be taken during the summer following the year in which Courses Civil Engineering 2A, 2B, and 2c are completed. Four weeks' continuous field practice. 3 units credit.

Section 2. Canal Survey.

This course comprises field and office work necessary for the location of a canal, including the following problems:

(a) Determination of stream flow.

(b) Location and design of head works.
(c) Contour and topographic surveys.

(d) Location survey.

(e) Final estimates.

Prescribed at the end of the Junior year for students in the Sanitary and Irrigation courses who do not elect Section 1. Prerequisites: Civil Engineering 3A, 2A, 2B, 10, 11A or Irrigation 2; Astronomy 2B. Four weeks' continuous field practice. 3 units credit.

Students interested in surveying field practice are advised to secure the Special Bulletins of Information of the Summer School of Surveying.

The determining of centers of gravity, moments of inertia, and reduction of plane areas graphically; graphical analysis of stresses in engineering structures. Equivalent to Course 5M in the regular session. 2 units.

A study of comparative theories in design with application to handicraft, interior decoration and the book arts. 2 units.

5A. Landscape. Miss SMITH and Assistant Professor HARSHE. Landscape composition and sketching in pencil, charcoal, "scrubbed' water color, and oil. Daily criticisms and, on Friday, a general studio criticism. Lectures on composition, the chemistry of pigments, methods and practice of various painters. 2 units.

Credit for matriculation subject 16 may be given, at the discretion of the instructors, to students who satisfactorily complete 5B and 5c. Students intending to offer these courses as a substitute for matriculation subject 16 should consult the instructors at the opening of the Summer Session.

The courses in Manual Training are planned to meet the needs of teachers, supervisors, principals, and superintendents who may have in view any of the following specific objects:

1. A knowledge of elementary bench work.

2. Teaching in the higher grammar grades.

3. Teaching in the high school.

4. Specialization along certain lines.

5. A knowledge of the equipment necessary for a manual training shop in the elementary or secondary schools.

The amateur craftsman also may find something of value in the

courses.

1. Primary Manual Training.

Miss BROWN.

For teachers of the first five grades of the public schools; paper and cardboard work; clay modeling, weaving, basketry, metal work, and elements of decorative and constructive design. Lectures and laboratory. Laboratory fee, $3.50. 2 units. M Tu W Th F, 1-3. McKinley School.*

2A. Elementary Woodwork.

For those who have had no previous experience; a series of

models suitable for presentation in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grammar grades. Laboratory fee, $3.50. 2 units.

2B. Elementary Woodwork.

Bench work and cabinet making, for those who have completed 2A, or its equivalent. Laboratory fee, $3.50. 2 units.

3. Advanced Woodwork with Related Mechanical Drawing and Design. Mr. EVANS. (1) Advanced bench work and cabinet making: a review of fundamental processes; bench tools; woodworking machinery; furniture making and design; wood finishes.

(2) Turning and pattern-making: drill in elemental lathe operations followed by the making of patterns typical of basic principles. Laboratory fee, $5. 2 units.

4. Manual Training Equipments and Buildings.

Mr. EVANS.

(a) Typical equipments for elementary bench work and construction, cabinet making, turning, pattern-making, foundry, machine shop, forging, drawing and drafting. Relation of equipments to courses; adjustment to local conditions; economic problems; engineering problems; supplies, equipments in detail to meet given conditions; drawing up specifications; installing.

(b) School buildings to include shop rooms; shop buildings; motive power and shop arrangement. 2 units.
