The following courses are designed to afford an opportunity for school teachers to qualify as supervisors of school playgrounds, and to give to those preparing for work in public playgrounds, a correct understanding of the responsibilities and duties of the professional director, together with as much practical experience as the limited time of a summer course will permit. 1. Meaning and Function of Play. Dr. BEACH. A working knowledge of the principles of evolution and psychology will be assumed. Child life as a recapitulation of race history; the periods of child development with their characteristics, briefly reviewed and correlated with the meaning and function of play. Philosophy of play; a brief consideration of the various theories. Physiological, psychological and educational significance of play in the development of the child; its relation to health, and the development of willpower, moral stability and the finer social virtues. 1 unit. Location and equipment. Requirements for professional directors; education, general and special; practical experience; personality; examination, physical, theoretical and practical. Supervision of playgrounds. Medical supervision, first aid, concussions, fractures, and common accidents; or ganization of playgrounds, discipline, self-government. De partments, boys and girls; kindergarten, junior, intermediate. senior. Organization of games and teams; recreative, competitive, match games and tournaments; athletic meets; duties of officials; exhibitions. The recent report of the committee of the Playground Associa tion of America on a Normal Course in Play will be discussed in detail and will form a basis of the theoretical work in Courses 1 and 2. 1 unit. A model playground will be conducted to afford illustration and practical application of the principles and methods embodied in the preceding courses, as well as to give experience in teaching, supervising, and participating in all of the playground activities.
