Section 2. Irrigation and Sanitary Section.

This course comprises field and office work necesary for,

A. The location of a canal, including the following problems:
Determination of stream flow.

Location and design of head works.
Contour and topographic surveys.
Location survey.

Estimates.

B. A hydrographic survey of an existing reservoir.

C. Sanitary studies in connection with the camp water supply, including the following:

Sanitary survey of the watershed.

Study of the operation of the camp filter plant.
Bacterial tests of water.

Prescribed at the end of the Junior year for students in the Sanitary and Irrigation courses who do not elect Section 1. Prerequisites: Civil Engineering 3A, 2A, 2B, 10, 11A or Irriga tion 2; Astronomy 2в. Four weeks' continuous field practice. 3 units credit.

Students interested in surveying field practice are advised to secure the Special Bulletins of Information of the Summer School of Surveying.

Instruction in supervision and methods of teaching public school drawing. The work will include composition and design, still life, nature-studies, landscape, blackboard drawing, primary illustration, and pose. 2 units.

Credit for matriculation subject 16 may be given, at the dis cretion of the instructors, to students who satisfactorily complete course 4. Students intending to offer this course as a substitute for matriculation subject 16 must consult the instructor at the opening of the Summer Session.

The courses in Manual Training are planned to meet the needs of teachers, supervisors, principals, and superintendents who may have in view any of the following specific objects:

1. A knowledge of elementary bench work.

2. Teaching in the higher grammar grades.

3. Teaching in the high school.

4. Specialization in any of the several lines of shopwork.

5. A knowledge of the equipment necessary for a manual training shop in the elementary or secondary schools.

6. An understanding of what should be included in manval training courses in grade and high schools.

1. Primary Manual Training.

Miss BROWN.

The course is designed to cover manual training in all its branches for the first five grades of the public schools. It includes the construction of simple geometrical figures by laying of sticks and parquetry; freehand paper tearing, cutting and folding; paper weaving and stencilling; raffia wrapping, tying, and weaving; textile weaving; simple basketry, clay modeling; constructive work in cardboard; elementary decorative and constructive design. Laboratory fee, $3.50. 2 units.

2B. Elementary Woodwork.

Bench work and cabinet making for those who have completed 2A or its equivalent. Laboratory fee, $3.50. 2 units.

3. Advanced Woodwork with Related Mechanical Drawing and Design. Mr. EVANS. (1) Advanced bench work and cabinet making: a review of fundamental processes; bench tools; woodworking machinery; furniture making and design; wood finishes.

(2) Turning and pattern-making: drill in elemental lathe operations followed by the making of patterns typical of basic principles. Laboratory fee, $5. 2 units.

4. Manual Training Equipments, Courses and Buildings.

Mr. EVANS. (a) Typical equipments for elementary bench work and con struction, cabinet making, turning, pattern-making, foundry, machine shop, forging, drawing and drafting. Relatien of equipments to courses; adjustment to local conditions; eco nomic problems, engineering problems; supplies, equipments in detail to meet given conditions; drawing up specifications; installing.

(b) Outline courses for grade and high school classes. (c) School buildings to include shop rooms; shop buildings; motive power and shop arrangement. 2 units.

5. The Theory and Practice of Teaching Industrial Arts in the Elementary and Secondary Schools. Mr. LEONARD. Shop work, lectures, informal discussions, and assigned readings. This course is planned for Principals, Supervisors and teachers whose personal needs are not fully met in the other courses. The shop work, as well as assigned readings, will depend largely upon individual needs and therefore cannot be clearly defined in this announcement. The course will include discussions relative to the place of the Manual Arts in the school, their relation to vocational instruction, their relation to other school subjects such as art, nature-study, history, physics and chemistry, the organization of courses of study, methods of presentation in the Manual Arts, the amount, kind and cost of equipment, present day tendencies in the Manual Arts, and a study of typical schools in various parts of the country. 2 units.
