The degrees of MASTER OF SCIENCE and DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY are granted under the general conditions stated in the Graduate Department of this REGISTER. Students wishing either of these degrees, with Chemistry as the principal study, should announce their intention to the Professor of Chemistry, and arrange with him a course of study and of practical laboratory work. Supervision and assistance will be

given in both.

Courses for Teachers. Courses 2, 2A, 3, 4, 6, and 9 may be regarded as especially suitable for teachers, either actual or prospective. Other courses for teachers may be added, if the growth of the demand should justify them.

1. Formal Logic.

With particular reference to practice on division, definition, the forms and transformations of judgments, the syllogism, deductive and inductive, and fallacies.

2. Elementary Psychology.

The facts of consciousness, their classification and analysis, and their relations to neural physiology; with demonstrations in brain anatomy and in experimental psychology.

2A. General Psychology.

Assistant Professor STRATTON. Lectures on the contents, form, variation, and interrelation of the characteristic mental processes; and on the development of consciousness.

3 hrs., second half.

M., W., F., 8:30. Prerequisite: At least Sophomore standing, or status of Special Student in Pedagogy.

3. Introduction to Philosophy. (G.E.)

History of European Philosophy from Thales to Kant, inclusive. 4 hrs., second half. M., Tu., Th., F., 2:50. Professor HowISON, lectures, M., Th., F., and Dr. BAKEWELL, parallel reading, Tu. Prerequisite: Course 2.

4. Elementary Ethics, including Civil Polity. (G.E.)

Sketch of the history of ethical theories; critique of the conflict between hedonism and rigorism, necessitation and freedom, pessimism and optimism; investigation of the nature of a state, and of its bearing on the limits of liberty and allegiance; sketch of the history of political theories.

6. Introductory Experimental Psychology. (G.E.)

Assistant Professor STRATTON.

Detailed demonstration of characteristic groups of experiments, with especial attention to the use of apparatus and to the methods of psychological experiment.

Professor HOWISON.

Seminary study and criticism of its main features, and of the chief modern expositions of it.

3 hrs., throughout the year. Prerequisite: Graduate standing, or Senior standing with distinction in Philosophy; familiarity with the subjects of Course 1-3; good reading knowledge of Greek, German, and French. Book cost not less than $22.

8. Hegel's Logic.

Professor HOWISON.

Seminary study at first hand, with a particular reference to the differences between the Larger and the Lesser forms of the work, and a comparison of the principal commentaries.

4 hrs., throughout the year. First half, Tu., Th., 3:45-5:35; second half, S., 8:30-12:10. Prerequisite: Graduate standing; familiarity with German, and with the subjects of Courses 1-5.

Professor HOWISON.

The philosophy of education. Discussion of the principles underlying all education, and of their main consequences in determining the materials and the methods of teaching.

2 hrs., throughout the year. Open to teachers, and to students preparing to teach, who are approved after conference with the lecturer.

10. Inductive Logic. (G.E.)

Assistant Professor McGILVARY.

Based on a study of the Logic of J. S. Mill, and having especial reference to the criticism of its characteristic doctrines.

2 hrs., throughout the year. W., F., 3:45. Prerequisite: Course 1; or the status of Special or Regular Student in Pedagogy, if the applicant is approved after conference with the instructor. *Not given in 1897-98.

11. Advanced General Logic. (G.E.)

Assistant Professor McGILVARY.

Based on a study and criticism of developments in the science since Mill, especially in the writings of Lotze, Bradley, and Bosanquet. 2 hrs., throughout the year; in 1896-97, beginning second half. S., 8:30-10:20. Prerequisite: Course 10.

12. Hume and Kant. (G.E.)

Development and criticism of the scepticism latent in both Empirieism and Rationalism.

13. Psychological Conference. (G.E.)

Assistant Professor STRATTON. Study and discussion of selected topics in general psychology, in their historical setting and as treated by writers of the present day.

Individual investigation of special problems assigned for practice in the use of apparatus and in the application of the methods of psychological experiment.
