Excerpt from Church Matters in 1850: A Call to Speak Out

The duty of breaking communion, when it exists, rests, in some cases, on purely moral grounds; in some, also, on grounds which may be called sacramental. The first, set forth in such passages as Rom. Xvi. 17; 2 Tim. Iii. 5 2 John, 10. Now this is what moralists call a duty of imperfect obligation zle. Though it is always binding as a principle, the manner and degree of its action must be modified by each trian's circumstances; it is like the duty of avoiding bad company in general. It is not this with which our present argument is concerned.
