Spanish. A minimum of 20 units of Upper Division Spanish, including Spanish 106A-106B, 107A-107B, 108A-108B, and 4 units of graduate work. The recommendation for the certificate, however, is not given for mere accumulation of courses, but for proficiency in the foreign language, based on the student's record and on a special oral and written examination.

Honors. Provision has been made for graduation with honors in French, Italian, or Spanish. Consult the head of the department for information.

LOWER DIVISION COURSES.

A. PRIMARILY FOR FRESHMEN.

Stress is laid on accurate pronunciation, which is treated phonetically, and on the essentials of grammar.

A-B. First-year French.

Mr. LAMARE. This course combines the work of French A-B and French C-D. It is intended for students preparing for the junior courses in one year, or needing a knowledge of French for use in other studies. 5 hrs., throughout the year. M Tu W Th F, 9.

Mr. SOLOMON.

This course covers the ground of French A-B. It is intended mainly for students matriculating in January, or intending to enter French C-D the following August.

Further study of grammar, especially syntax. Reading and discussion of texts, as far as possible in the foreign language itself; composition and writing.
