At the time of the transfer the official designation of the Station was changed to the Scripps Institution for Biological Research of the Univer sity of California. While the title of the property and the ultimate responsibility for the management of the Institution now rests with the Regents of the University, the determination of policy both as to develop ment and scientific undertakings and nearly all the details of manage ment have been entrusted by the Regents to a local board consisting of Miss Ellen B. Scripps, the chief benefactor of the Institution, Mr. E. W. Scripps, Director Ritter, and such other persons as may be agreed upon by them and the Regents. Thus far two additions to the board have been named: Dr. Fred Baker of San Diego, President of the Marine Biologie! Association from its organization, and Mr. George A. Haines, an attorney of San Diego, who became secretary of the board.

As indicated by the change of name the Institution is now more tha ever committed to research as its main function. It is, however, no less desirous than before of giving to visiting naturalists and to advanced students all the encouragement and facilities compatible with its research programme.

The local board anticipates that after the new developmental work soon to be entered upon at the laboratory is completed, some regular plan may be adopted whereby more can be done for graduate students and visiting investigators than has been practicable during the pioneering years.
