PREFACE." Necessity is the mother of invention." It is said that Geometry owes its origin

to the inundation of the Nile. The Egyptians, before the invention of geometry, had no proofs for the recovery of their lands after a great inundation. This work is intended to comprise a selection of Euclid, Bonnycastle, and Darley's definitions and problems, forming a short system of practical geometry. This edition is much enlarged and improved, and several of Bonnycastle's problems are added: some of the constructions and definitions are very much abridged, and some are wholly left out. It is intended that this shall be an introduction to practical geometry, and it will be as clear and concise as possible. Darley's axioms are here inserted, and also a copious index.

The whole is fully explained by demonstrations and diagrams, and enriched by explanatory notes. The work is intended to be comprised in as small a compass as possible, so as to render it perfectly clear and easy of comprehension. The diagrams are drawn as correctly as possible, so as to make the problems and definitions clear, and perhaps sometimes the regularity and beauty of the drawing is sacrificed in order to effect this; but I think it is better to do this, rather than to
