spring and motives of his views and conduct, and was therefore, capable of duly appreciating the worth of such a companion. His testimony regarding his lamented associate, cannot be better given than in his own words. He writes thus:

"In various conversations with my dear young friend on different topics, he evinced great acuteness, united with considerable force and precision in illustrating what he thought to be correct. A short time previous to the commencement of his last illness-although he did not then appear to be conscious of his end being near our discourse turned more exclusively upon religious subjects, when he stated his views on the fundamental doctrines of Christianity with so much clearness and confidence, as plainly to prove that he had experienced the blessed effect. of religion on the heart: he would frequently express his entire belief in the

sufficiency of the atonement of Jesus Christ for every purpose of salvation, and the absolute necessity of a simple reliance in humble faith on Him, as the sole ground of acceptance and in his case, this was not merely theory, it was supported by daily practice. The sweet and gentle deportment which he exhibited, particularly towards the close of his life, was evidently of no human character, it was the robe of Christ's eternal righteousness. How often did he place his whole confidence in the Saviour, and constantly assert that all his hope was in Him, utterly distinct from any work of his own! May the remembrance of his acquaintance be ever cherished by me for my own benefit! and, though sorrowing at my loss, may a feeling of gratitude prevail for my beloved companion's happy release, and an earnest desire for myself to attain, through the mercy of God in Christ Jesus, an entrance equally

A letter has also been found, since his decease, which was written to him when he was from home. It is not without some feeling of repugnance that an extract is exposed in these papers; encouraged, however, by a hope that the perusal of it, -warm from the heart, and to the heart addressed, may find a profitable place in the minds of some of his young friends who now survive him, as it did it is

He was a warm well-wisher to the various benevolent institutions of the day, more particularly those for the abolition of Negro Slavery, the education of the poor, and the universal spread of the Holy Scriptures.

A vice too prevalent, particularly amongst the poor, occasionally came under his observation, which induced him to become a juvenile collector, as well as contributor, in promoting the cause of temperance. In his Pocket Book, a list of his subscribers, very accurately kept, together with the sum of five shillings and one penny, has been found since his decease, which he had received, in small contributions, for this object; and has been forwarded to the "British and Foreign Temperance Society."

To his faithful nurse, Susan Holmes, who had been a servant in the family pre

vious to his birth, he was gratefully attached, and not without reason, for she was most assiduous in her attention to his wants. No domestic duty, ever so important, but she would leave, to reach, to fetch, or to carry for him, or to assist him with what he required for the prosecution of his studies or his amusements, as well as to watch over him, and wait upon him in times of sickness, by night or by day. She was much with him, or at his call, whenever he was confined to his chamber, or engaged in his study; and he would sometimes discourse with her upon serious and religious topics with more freedom than he chose to do before others; so that she used to say, she believed no one knew his worth equal to herself.
