REGULATIONS CONCERNING SPECIAL
STUDENTS.

The courses of study provided by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences are open to persons who give satisfactory evidence of their fitness to pursue the particular courses they elect, although they have not passed the usual examinations for admission. These students are known as Special Students. They may become candidates for a degree by satisfying the requirements for admission to the Freshman Class. To be recommended for a degree, however, they must have been registered as candidates for that degree for at least one year.

SPECIAL STUDENTS IN THE COLLEGE.

The following classes of persons may be admitted as Special Students in Harvard College :

1. Students who have completed with credit the work of one year in some other college (see p. 345). These students will be registered as Special Students until the Committee on Admission from Other Colleges is able to determine on the basis of their work what advanced standing they should have as candidates for the degree of A.B.

2. Those who wish to register at the University for a year or more to pursue the study of some particular subject.

3. Those whose school or academy training has not fitted them for the usual examinations for admission to College, but who wish to follow for one or more years a course of liberal study.

Candidates for admission to Harvard College as Special Students may obtain from the Secretary blank forms of application, which should be duly filled and returned to the Secretary. They are advised to apply before September 1; but applications will be considered at any time of the year.

Special Students in Harvard College are subject to all the regulations of the College. They are under the charge of a Committee of the Faculty; and each student is under the particular supervision of a member of the

Committee, who acts as his adviser. Every Special Student is required to meet his adviser before the beginning of the academic year, at a time and a place to be announced on the official bulletin boards, and to submit his choice of studies for approval.

Grades are assigned to Special Students in the several courses (see p. 484); and Special Students are subject to all requirements affecting the courses which they take. The names of Special Students who attain Grade A or Grade B in any course are entered, at the end of the year, in the printed list of distinguished students in the course (see p. 484), and this list is sent to the father or recognized guardian of every student.

A Certificate of Proficiency will be given, if desired, to any Special Student who has faithfully pursued his chosen subjects throughout a year and attained therein a grade not lower than Grade B.

A Special Student who has passed in twelve elective courses, and has stood above Grade C in six courses (or their equivalent) without falling below Grade C in any course, may on application receive a Certificate to this effect on Commencement Day, and be named in the Commencement Programme as the recipient of such certificate. If he has received Honors in any department or Honorable Mention in any study, that fact will be stated in his certificate and will be mentioned in the Commencement Programme and in the next Annual Catalogue.

SPECIAL STUDENTS IN THE SCIENTIFIC SCHOOL.

Special Students may be admitted to the Lawrence Scientific School under the conditions named below.

When the candidate has not been a pupil in any preparatory school for at least one year before the date of his application, and is a person of sufficient maturity and training to qualify him to pursue studies offered in one of the programmes of study in the School, he may be admitted as a Special Student by the Administrative Board. His plan of study must be arranged with reference to the end he seeks to attain, and must be approved by the officer in charge of one of the following programmes of study Engineering, Mining, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Anatomy, Teachers. Except on special vote of the Administrative Board, he will be required, each year, to take work amounting to not less than four full courses.

When the candidate has been a member of a fitting school within one year of the time he applies for admission as a Special Student, his application must be approved by the master of that school. In case he has endeavored to attain regular standing and has failed to pass in a sufficient number of subjects, but is credited with not less than half of the number of "points" required for a clear admission, including English, Algebra, and Geometry, he may, by vote of the Administrative Board, taken in

each case in view of the recommendations he brings, be admitted as a Special Student with the expectation that he will gain regular standing in one of the ways indicated below:

First: By passing the entrance examinations in the omitted subjects. Second: By obtaining a grade of C, or above, in studies directly in continuation of the subjects in which he has failed to pass in the entrance examinations; as for instance, Advanced French would, if passed with the grade mentioned, remove the entrance" condition in Elementary

French.

Third: By combining the methods above indicated.

Students who, on the recommendation of the masters of fitting schools, have permission to register as Special Students, will be required, except on special vote of the Administrative Board, to attain regular standing within one year after the beginning of the term at which they enter on their course of study.

At least two full courses of the work of each Special Student in the Scientific School must be taken from the regular programme of the department of study in which he registers.

Special Students are members of the Scientific School from the time of their admission, but are not recognized as in regular standing or as candidates for a degree.

A candidate for admission to the Lawrence Scientific School as a Special Student may obtain a printed form of application from the Secretary of the School. The form must be filled and returned to the Secretary before the application will be considered by the Administrative Board of the School.

Special Students are subject to all the regulations of the School. A report is sent to their parents or guardians at the end of each year.

The Administrative Board reserves the right to deprive any Special Student of his privileges at any time, if he abuse or fail to use them.

Certain of the subjects required for admission are offered in the courses of instruction in the Summer School of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. So far as practicable, provision will be made for the instruction in the Summer School, or by private tutors, of those who, during the long vacation, desire to prepare themselves to pass the entrance examinations held in Cambridge in September. This provision is especially designed to meet the needs of candidates who come from schools in which certain of the subjects which may be offered in the entrance examinations are not taught.

A Certificate of Proficiency will be given, if desired, to any Special Student who has faithfully pursued his chosen subjects throughout a year and attained a grade not lower than grade B therein.
