DEGREES IN ARTS, SCIENCE, AND

PHILOSOPHY.

All degrees bestowed by the University are awarded by vote of the President and Fellows of Harvard College, with the consent of the Board of Overseers, and are publicly conferred by the President on Commencement Day.

The ordinary degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Science are awarded to students recommended for those degrees by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The Statutes of the University require that no person shall be recommended for any of the ordinary degrees, except after thorough public examination, and a residence at the University for at least one year.

No year is counted to a student by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as a full year of study towards a degree which is not devoted to studies approved by the Faculty, or under its authority, as suitable and sufficient to be so counted.

CONDITIONS OF CANDIDACY.

In order to be recommended for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, a student must have been registered in Harvard College, as a candidate for that degree, at least one academic year.

In order to be recommended for the degree of Bachelor of Science, a student must have been registered in the Lawrence Scientific School, as a candidate for that degree, at least one academic year.

Any Bachelor of Arts of Harvard University is qualified to become a candidate for the degree of Master of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy; and any Bachelor of Science of Harvard University is qualified to become a candidate for the degree of Master of Science or Doctor of Science. But the requirements of residence and study for those degrees must also be fulfilled.

A student in the Graduate School, or intending to enter it, not a Bachelor of Arts of Harvard University, who wishes to become a candidate for the degree of Master of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy, must apply to the Administrative Board of the Graduate School to be accepted as qualified for candidacy, or to learn the conditions on which he may be so accepted. Application should be made by filling out a blank which

may be obtained at the office of the Dean of the Graduate School. It should be accompanied by catalogues or calendars of the colleges or other institutions of advanced grade at which the student has previously studied, which must be marked so as to show clearly his course of study there; and also by certificates of his scholarship at such institutions. The Board will take into account, at their discretion, extra studies pursued by the applicant, studies pursued by him since graduation, teaching of advanced grade, and professional study. Early application to the Board is recommended, in order that the student may have time to conform his plans of study to such conditions as the Board may impose.

A student in the Graduate School, or intending to enter it, not a Bachelor of Science of Harvard University, who wishes to become a candidate for the degree of Master of Science or Doctor of Science, must make an application in like manner to the Committee on Admission to the Lawrence Scientific School from other Scientific Schools, and must present similar evidence of study and scholarship.

Every student in the Graduate School, properly qualified for candidacy, who wishes to be registered as a candidate for a degree, must apply in writing, in the course of the academic year in which he desires to be a candidate, and not later than the fifteenth day of January, to the Administrative Board of the Graduate School, to be placed on the list of candidates for the desired degree. He must send in at the same time a precise statement of the field of study or courses of instruction on which he will be prepared to offer himself for examination; and he must also state, in case he is an applicant for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or of Science, the title of his thesis. No Graduate Student can present himself for examination for a degree until his application to be placed on the list of candidates has been granted by the Administrative Board of the Graduate School. Students may ascertain at any time in the academic year, by application to the Administrative Board, whether their proposed courses and methods of study, if carried on for the required time, will be approved for the degrees sought.

DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS.

In order to be recommended for the degree of BACHELOR OF ARTS, a candidate must have passed in studies amounting to sixteen courses, together with such work in English as may be prescribed for him; making a total of seventeen or seventeen and a half courses, as the case may be. He must, moreover, have attained a grade above D in at least two-thirds of all the work done by him in Harvard University in satisfaction of the requirements for the degree.

A student in Harvard College must take, in each academic year, at least four courses, in addition to such work in English as may be prescribed

for him; and (including his prescribed English) he may take six, but not more, as regular courses to be counted towards the degree. Certain studies taken in the summer may also be counted towards the degree. Accordingly, a student who enters the Freshman Class without serious deficiency may complete the requisite number of courses in four, three and a half, or three years.

A student may shorten the requisite period of residence and study by anticipating college studies at the time of his admission (see p. 343); or by securing credit for work satisfactorily performed at another college (see p. 345); but no student will be recommended for the degree of Bachelor of Arts until he has completed at least one year of residence and study as a candidate for that degree; and no student admitted to the Freshman Class will be recommended for the degree until he has completed three years of residence and study.

A candidate who has fulfilled all the requirements for the degree in three years and a half may obtain, on petition, leave of absence until the following Commencement, when the degree will be conferred upon him. A candidate who has completed all the requirements at the end of his third year and desires to graduate without further residence may, at his own option, either receive the degree at that time,* or obtain leave of absence during his fourth year and take the degree at the end of that year. For a method of combining the requirements for the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, see page 499.

A student admitted to advanced standing must complete the requirements of the remainder of his course, under such conditions as may be imposed at the time of his admission.

Any student who has not complied with the requirements for a degree before the end of his College course may be recommended for a degree in a subsequent year, when he has made up all deficiencies in his record.

Bachelor of Arts with Distinction.

The degree of Bachelor of Arts with distinction is conferred under the following rules; such distinction being awarded in three grades.

Any member of the graduating class of Harvard College who has attained Grade C or a higher grade in as many courses as he is required to pursue for the degree, is recommended for a degree with distinction on the following conditions:

* A student who satisfies the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts at the end of three years shall be permitted to have his name entered in the Quinquennial Catalogue under the year following, provided that he file a written application for such entry with the Recorder of Harvard College at least two weeks before Commencement Day of the year in which the degree is to be conferred. To each name thus entered in the Quinquennial Catalogue shall be affixed the date of the year in which the degree was actually conferred.

If he has attained Grade A in fifteen courses or their equivalent, or has received Highest Final Honors in any Department, he is recommended for a degree summa cum laude;

If he has attained Grade A in nine courses or their equivalent, or Grade A or B in fifteen courses or their equivalent, or has received Final Honors in any Department, he is recommended for a degree magna cum laude;

If he has attained Grade A or B in nine courses or their equivalent, or has received Honorable Mention twice, he is recommended for a degree cum laude.

In the consideration of a student's claim to a degree with distinction, grades attained in courses taken by anticipation (see p. 344) are not counted.

The cases of members of the graduating class of very high scholarship who have not fulfilled the foregoing requirements are considered on their merits.

The reason for the grade of distinction is stated in the diploma.

A Commencement Part is assigned to every student recommended for a degree with distinction: an Oration to a candidate for a degree summa cum laude, a Dissertation to a candidate for a degree magna cum laude, and a Disquisition to a candidate for a degree cum laude. The words Oration, Dissertation, and Disquisition indicate merely the grade of distinction in the degree, and do not imply differences in the nature of the Commencement Parts.

DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE.

In order to be recommended for the degree of BACHELOR OF SCIENCE a student must have fulfilled the requirements for that degree in one of the departments of study organized in the Lawrence Scientific School. These requirements are stated on pages 476–483.

The degree of Bachelor of Science with distinction is conferred in three grades: cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude. The grade of the degree and the course of study for which the degree is given are specified in the Diploma.

Graduation in Three Years.

If a student has anticipated studies amounting to a substantial portion of the work of the first year of the Scientific School and desires to fulfil the requirements for the degree in three years, he may apply to the Administrative Board of the School for leave so to do, specifying in his application the manner in which he proposes to arrange his studies for that purpose. The Administrative Board will decide on such applications according to the circumstances of each case.

GRADUATION BOTH IN ARTS AND IN SCIENCE.

Students who wish to take the degree of Bachelor of Science in addition to the degree of Bachelor of Arts may register in the Lawrence Scientific School after their third year in Harvard College (or after the satisfactory completion of fourteen courses counting towards the degree of Bachelor of Arts). They will be recommended for the degree of Bachelor of Arts on the satisfactory completion of the required number of courses counting towards that degree, and for the degree of Bachelor of Science after at least two years in the Scientific School, the last year to be devoted to work prescribed by the Administrative Board of the Scientific School.

It is desirable that students who contemplate taking their degrees in this way seek advice in the selection of their studies while registered in Harvard College, in order that they may enter the Scientific School fully prepared for the required work.

DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS.

All work for the degree of Master of Arts must be done under the supervision of the Administrative Board of the Graduate School, either in the Graduate School or in some other Graduate department of the University.

The ordinary requirement for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS for a graduate of a college or scientific school of good standing consists of at least one year of residence and study in the Graduate School, devoted to advanced work approved by the Administrative Board of the School as affording suitable preparation for the degree, and completed with high credit. Other persons will be admitted to the degree on conditions to be determined in each case.

Undergraduates of Harvard College who have completed the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts will be admitted to the Graduate School as candidates for the degree of Master of Arts. Those who lack not more than a single course of completing the requirements may be admitted to the Graduate School in like manner, if in the judgment of the Dean of Harvard College and of the Administrative Board of the Graduate School they are likely to be able to secure the degree of Master of Arts in one year. The entire work of such men shall be carried on under the supervision of the Administrative Board of the Graduate School.

The programme of study for the degree of Master of Arts must form a consistent plan of work pursued with some definite aim, though it need not lie wholly in one Department or field; this work may be done either
