an original memoir upon some subject bearing upon his profession. The memoir or thesis must bear upon the principal subject of the course and be of such character as to show power to prosecute independent investigation and also ability to take responsible charge of important engineering work. The thesis must be presented to the Graduate Council through the Dean of the Graduate Division for approval at least two months previous to the final examination for the degree. Special emphasis will be laid upon the requirement of a thesis and a degree will in no case be given merely for the faithful completion of a course of study or the practical prosecution of an ordinary piece of engineering work.

Residence and study for a master's degree in any one of these branches of engineering may also be counted in candidacy for the degree of Engineer if in accordance with the provisions contained in the preceding paragraphs.

The division of time, study, and research among the principal and subsidiary subjects for the engineer's degree must be approved by the sub-committee in charge of the student. Every sub-committee must semi-annually on October 15 and March 15 present to the Graduate Council report of the studies and work actually accomplished by the candidate during the year, certified to by all members of the committee in charge. Any candidate failing to advise with his sub-committee unless excused for cause will be considered to have withdrawn from candidacy.

The degree of Engineer will not be conferred until the candidate shall have appeared before the sub-committee in charge and shall have satisfactorily passed upon the studies pursued in such examination, public and oral, as may be deemed necessary to show distinguished attainment in the principal subject.

Second Method

As an alternative for the procedure above outlined, any of the engineering degrees named above may be conferred upon a candidate who meets the following conditions:

(a) He must be a graduate of the University of California, in any of the colleges of letters, sciences, or engineering and of not less than five years' standing.

(b) He must give evidence of exceptionally successful professional work in the particular branch of engineering in which the degree is sought.

(c) His application must have been reported upon favorably by a committee composed of the Dean of the Graduate Division, the Dean of the University, and the three Deans of the Colleges of Engineering.

(d) He must present an acceptable thesis, especially prepared for this purpose, or in case of ten years of distinguished professional service the thesis requirement may be satisfied by a report on a constructive piece of work in the field of engineering. He should consult the Dean of the Graduate Division concerning the form of the thesis and the number of copies required.

The year, or years, of residence and the final examination in graduate status will be remitted for any candidate who meets the requirements a-d above.

HIGHER DEGREES FOR MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE

A member of the Academic Senate of professorial rank may not become a candidate for any higher degree to be conferred by the University. Instructors are not eligible for an advanced degree in the University of California subsequent to the attainment of the right to vote in the Academic Senate; provided, that persons holding the grade of instructor in April, 1922, who are, or may, become ineligible under this rule shall be permitted to proceed to the degree upon formally waiving the right to vote in the Academic Senate during the period of candidacy and if accepted for candidacy prior to the end of the semester beginning August, 1923. Under this regulation a voting member of the Academic Senate may not be advanced to candidacy after December, 1923.

LIST OF ACCEPTED INSTITUTIONS OF ASSOCIATION OF
AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AND THE UNIVERSITY
OF CALIFORNIA

The following is a list of institutions from which holders of bachelor's degrees representing the usual college course of four years will be admitted to the Graduate Division upon presentation of a diploma or certificate of graduation. Admission to the Graduate Division does not necessarily carry with it the privilege of proceeding to candidacy for a higher degree on the basis of minimum residence and subject requirements. The list serves administrative purposes, primarily, to facilitate prompt registration. The fact that an institution does not appear on this list should not be construed as a disapproval of the institution, but in general is accounted for by lack of definite information.

Applicants from institutions not in this list must report first to the Dean of the Graduate Division and secure his approval as a condition for registration. Such applicants should be prepared to submit at the time of registration complete records of all studies completed in high schools, normal schools, colleges and other higher institutions. Applicants from institutions included in the list are required to submit similar credentials if they desire to be considered for exemption from the tuition fee for non-residents or to become candidates for higher degrees or credentials issued to graduates.
