BACON, MATTHEW. His Abridgement' appeared first in 1736. It is said (Marvin's 'Legal Bibliography) to have been written for the most part by Baron Gilbert (see Gilbert), and merely to have been arranged for the press by Bacon. The edition used in this book is the 7th, by Gwillim and Dodd, 1832, in 8 vols.

BEST, W. M., on 'Evidence.' 1st ed. 1849; 10th ed. 1906 by J. M. Lely is cited in this book. Best also wrote a treatise on Presumptions of Law and Fact,' 1844. BLACKSTONE, WILLIAM (1723-1780); Vinerian professor of law at Oxford, 1758; Judge of the Common Pleas, 1770. The first volume of the Commentaries appeared in 1765, the other three in the next four years. The edition used in this book is the 21st, by Hargrave, etc., 1844, in 4 vols., cited as Bl. Comm.' The 'Reports ' (1746-1779) appeared in 1781.

BRACTON, HENRY DE (died 1268); Ecclesiastic and Judge; author of 'De Legibus et Consuetudinibus Angliæ': 'The first attempt to treat the whole extent of the law in a manner at once systematic and practical' (D. N. B.). 'Fleta' (about 1290) is a compendium of this work.

CARRINGTON, F. A.; joint editor of Carrington and Payne's and other Reports. The third edition of the Supplement to all the Treatises on the Criminal Law,' which is used in this book, appeared in 1828. CHITTY, JOSEPH (1776-1841); special pleader and legal writer. The first edition of the Treatise on Criminal Law' appeared in 1816; the second, that used in this book, in 1826, in 4 vols.

COKE, EDWARD (Sir, commonly called Lord Coke, 1552-1634); Chief Justice of the King's Bench, 1613. The Reports' first appeared in French (pleadings in Latin) from 1600 to 1615; the first English edition in 1658; the edition used in this book is by Thomas and Fraser, 1826, in 6 vols. There have been many editions of the 'Institutes: the first of the First Part appeared in 1628; that of the Second in 1642; that of the Third and Fourth in 1644. The edition of the First Part (Coke upon Littleton') used in this book is by Hargrave and Butler, 19th ed., 1832, in 2 vols. of the other parts, an edition of 1809 (Latin text and translation) in 4 vols.

COMYNS, JOHN; Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer, 1738; died 1740. The Digest of the Laws of England' first appeared (translated from law French into English) 1762-1767. The edition used in this book is Anthony Hammond's, published in 1822, in 8 vols. The Reports (also translated) appeared in 1744.

CRAIES, W. F. (1854-1911); Barrister and legal writer (Statutory Law, Marriage Laws of the British Empire'); a great authority on criminal law, on which he wrote in The Encyclopædia of the Laws of England,' and often elsewhere.

DALTON, MICHAEL; probably died' (Dict. Nat. Biog.) between 1648 and 1655; little is known about him. The Country Justice appeared in 1618; there have been many editions, that used in this book being of 1742. He also published, in 1623, a work on the Office of Sheriff. EAST, EDWARD HYDE (1764-1847); Chief Justice of Calcutta, 1813; Member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. The Treatise of the Pleas of the Crown,' 2 vols., appeared in 1803; the Term Reports' (1785-1800), 5 vols., in 1817, and other (East's) Reports, in 16 vols. (1800-1812) from 1801 to 1814.

FITZHERBERT, ANTHONY (1470-1538); Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, 1521. La Graunde Abridgement' appeared in 1514; the edition used in this book is Tottell's, in 1577; that of 'L'Office et Auctority de Justices de Peace' (1583) is Crompton's, in 1606. FOSTER, MICHAEL (1689-1763); Judge of the King's Bench, 1745. The 'Crown Cases and Discourses on Crown Law' appeared in 1762; the 3rd ed., by Dodson, used in this book, was published in 1792. He was the Judge in some of the cases to which he refers.

GILBERT, GEOFFREY (1674-1726); Chief Baron of the Exchequer, Ireland, 1715; Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer, England, 1725. He wrote many legal works, including The Law of Evidence,' 1761; the edition used in this book is the sixth (1801), which is only the first volume of Lofft's edition in 4 vols., published in 1796, which has been used for the three other volumes. See Bacon, Matthew. GREAVES, C. S. (1802-1881); Q.C. 1850; editor of Russell on Crimes,' 3rd ed. (1843 and 1851); writer on criminal law: he had much to do with the preparation of 14 & 15 Vict. c. 19 and c. 100, and with that of the Consolidation Acts of 1861.

HALE, MATTHEW (1609-1676); Judge of the Common Pleas, 1654; Chief Justice of the King's Bench, 1671. The History of the Pleas of the Crown' was first edited by Sollom Emlyn in 1736; this, the editio princeps, was re-edited by Dogherty, in 1800 (edition used in this book).

HAWKINS, WILLIAM (1673-1746); Serjeant-at-law, 1723. The Treatise of the Pleas of the Crown' first appeared in 1716; there have been many editions; that used in this book, by T. Leach, appeared in 1795 in 4 vols.

MAITLAND, F. W. (1850-1906); Downing Professor of the Laws of England at Cambridge; barrister (1876): one of the most scholarly lawyers who ever lived; author, with Sir F. Pollock, K.C., of History of English Law before the Time of Edward I.' (1895). PHILLIPPS, S. M. The Treatise on the Law of Evidence' first appeared in 1814. The 10th ed., in 2 vols. (1852), that cited in this book (as Ph. Ev.'), is jointly edited by T. J. Arnold, a police magistrate. ROLLE, HENRY; Chief Justice of the King's Bench, 1645; died 1656. The Abridgement' appeared in 1668; the Reports' in 1675-1676. Greaves, Q.C., in 1843 and 1865; the 7th ed. (1909), in 3 vols., has been used in this book, except when it is otherwise stated. Russell and Ryan's Reports (Crown Cases, 1799-1824) appeared in 1825.

STARKIE, THOMAS; Downing Professor at Cambridge; Q.C. The 1st ed. of the Practical Treatise on the Law of Evidence' appeared in 1824; the 4th in 1853. His work on Slander and Libel' appeared about 1822: the 6th ed., by Folkard, in 1897. The edition of Starkie's books used is always stated.

STEPHEN, FITZJAMES (1829-1894); Judge in 1879; of the Q. B. Div. 1881; editor of the 7th edition of this book (1868). The 6th ed.
