EDITOR'S ADVERTISEMENT

TO THE SECOND AMERICAN EDITION.

A new edition of the Reports of MR. EAST is submitted to the Profession. Twenty-seven years have elapsed since the first American edition, by Mr. Thomas Day, was published, and copies of the work are now but rarely to be met with. The great value of these Reports, arising from the extent and variety of the topics which they embrace, and the very full exposition of Mercantile Law which they embody, must always render them highly acceptable to the American lawyer. The sound common sense and practical views, with the elevated morality, of Lord Kenyon, and the masterly expositions of the Law Merchant by Lord Ellenborough, his successor in the Court of King's Bench, make the study of these volumes as delightful, as the weight of these great names renders their decisions valuable as authoritative precedents.

The editor of this edition has aimed at nothing more than a brief annotation of the leading cases in the Reports, and references to some of the most important decisions upon similar points in the chief commercial States of the Union.

The notes of the editor are included in brackets [-], with the initial W. at the end, and are referred to by figures, 1, 2, 3, &c. The notes of Mr. Day are distinguished by figures only; while those of Mr. East may be known from the references by letters, a, b, c, &c.
