UPPER DIVISION COURSES

117B. Gas Engineering. Assistant Professor TOUR. Methods and processes used in the manufacture of illuminating gas, including coal gas, carburetted water gas, and oil gas. The construction and operation of gas manufacturing plants. Supplementary lectures on alternate Fridays by gas engineers of the Pacific Coast.

3 hrs., second half-year; 2 units. M W, alt. F, 11. Prerequisite: Mechanics 1A, Gas Engineering 118A-118B or Chemistry 126, 111A, 111B.

118A-118B. Gas Engineering Laboratory. Assistant Professor TOUR. Analysis of illuminating gas. The calorific value of solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels. The determination of specific gravity. Photometry of gas illumination.

3 hrs., throughout the year; 1 unit each half-year. Hours to be arranged. Prerequisite: Chemistry 5 or equivalent.

120. Gas Engineering Laboratory.

Assistant Professor Tour.

Incidental tests such as for naphthalene, free carbon in tars, sulphur in purifying material, distillation of oil, etc.

3 hrs., first half-year; 1 unit. Hours to be arranged.

GRADUATE COURSES

218. Gas Engineering Problems.

Associate Professor RABER and Assistant Professor TOUR.

Special research problems in gas engineering.

Hours and credit value to be arranged. Prerequisite: courses 117

and 118.

220. Gas Power Engineering.

Associate Professor RABER.

The theory and design of gas, gasoline and oil engines; gas producer practice; the combustion of gaseous fuels.

3 hrs., second half-year, to be arranged. Prerequisite: Mechanics 1A and 105A, and 105B; or the latter may be taken concurrently.

MEDICAL SCHOOL

At present the instruction of the first one and one-half years of the medical course is given in Berkeley. The first year of this work may also be counted towards the bachelor's degree in the College of Letters and Science for those who have attained senior standing. See departments of anatomy, biochemistry and pharmacology, physiology, and pathology and bacteriology. For further information reference should be made to the special announcement of the Medical School.

2 hrs., throughout the year, and four half-day field exercises; 11⁄2 units each year, credited 1⁄2 unit at the end of first half-year, 1 unit at end of second half-year. M W, 11 (Tu, 3-5 for mounted detachment), and four half-days to be announced.

Infantry drill regulations and manual of guard duty.

2B. Theoretical Course.

Professor NANCE. Lectures on small arms target practice, organization, discipline, the subjects contained in field service regulations, map reading, military history, and military policy of the United States.

12c. Theoretical Course.

Professor NANCE. Lectures on subjects in minor tactics, solution of tactical problems, map and terrain. Exercises in company administration and the

preparation of official papers.

HONORS

Students will be recommended for honors at graduation on the basis of the quality of work done in the regular curriculum of the senior year. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the student's capacity for original work.

VACATION WORK

It is expected of candidates for the bachelor's degree in the College of Mining that before graduation they shall have made themselves familiar with some operating mine, metallurgical plant, or producing oil property, preferably by working in the same, or shall have pursued independent studies in economic geology, during vacation.

There are no laboratory fees in this department.

LOWER DIVISION COURSES

1. Mine Surveying and Mapping.

Associate Professor WEEKS and Mr. UREN. Surface and underground mine surveys: methods of traversing and collecting details. Preparation of mine maps from survey data, and methods of representing geological and other features on mine maps. Lectures, field and drafting-room practice.
