[2079 Bryan, G: The law of petroleum and natural gas; with forms. Phil., G: T. Bisel, 1898. C. 14+521 p. O. shp., $5. [2080 The author and compiler calls attention to one or two features of the plan of this work. In the first place, it is not a treatise upon the law of mines and mining, being restricted to the law as it applies to oil and gas. The history of petroleum as an article of commerce dates from about 1860. From the peculiar nature of oil and gas, questions absolutely new to the courts have arisen since then, to which there seemed to be no guide. This has suggested the following work. It is a presentation of the leading cases from the several courts which have made the subject one of special study and should be very welcome to the profession.

A strong character study of a neurotic by the author of "A yellow aster." "Poor Max" is a brilliant, versatile genius, with no strength of will and no power of resisting temptation. He marries a pretty, intelligent girl, whose life becomes a tragedy when his true character dawns upon her. He is false and insincere, wasteful and extravagant. They become involved in debts, and live upon borrowed money. The wife, through force of circumstances, becomes the husband's nurse and protector. The husband's death and a second marriage end the story.

"In this volume Professor Groos makes a contribution to three distinct but cognate departments of inquiry; philosophical biology, animal psychology, and the genetic study of art. Those who have followed the beginnings of inquiry into the nature and func tions of play in the animal world and in children will see at once how much light is to be expected from a thoroughgoing examination of all the facts and observations recorded in the literature of animal life. This sort of examination Professor Groos makes with great care and thoroughness, and the result is a book which, in my opinion, is destined to have wide influence in all these departments of inquiry."-From the Editor's Preface.
