The method followed in this book has been thoroughly tested in practical work. It is to first study some of the life processes of plants, especially those which illustrate the fundamental principles of nutrition, assimilation, growth, and irritability. In studying each one of these topics, plants are chosen, so far as possible, from several of the great groups. Members of the lower plants as well as the higher plants are employed, in order to show that the process is fundamentally the same in all plants. Then another process is studied in a similar way, using so far as possible, especially where the lower plants are concerned, the same plant.

[3263 The treatment of this history of French literature differs from most manuals; it is not classified into centuries and the arbitrary divisions of prose and poetry, but into "literary epochs," the writer paying more attention than is ordinarily paid to the epoch of transition. The proportions of the work are laid out as mathematically as possible, giving to each author the importance that he seems best to deserve. A running essay occupies about a half of each page, and the other half is devoted to a series of marvellously devised notes or notices, with an invaluable bibliography of each author. The manual, which begins with the year 842, is brought down to the end of the epoch of

Naturalism, or the year 1875, the last great figure

studied being Alexandre Dumas, fils. *Carpenter, G: Rice, ed. American prose; selections, with critical introds., by various writers, and a general introd. N. The Messrs. Otterburn & Co. had made their wealth in a large paper mill that had been owned by the firm for at least half a century. The extravagance and recklessness of the elder son causes the firm to fail, and both the mill and their home, Otterburn Chase, are sold. The story deals with the sons reduced to poverty. The youngest goes back to the mill as a clerk, the elder prefers to live on his friends. The moral of the two lives is well brought out. Clark, Mrs. Hattie Arnold. Pro Christo: the story of a royal Huguenot. N. Y., American Tract Soc., [1898.] c. 330 p. il. D. cl.. $1.25.

[3266 A story in which the author has aimed to faithfully portray the life and times of the Huguenots during the reign of Louis XIV. Many of the characters introduced are notable figures in French history; among these are Claude Brousson, the Huguenot advocate; Fulcrand Rey, the young preacher and martyr; Jean Paulet, the Abbé Fenelon, and Madame de Maintenon. "Pro Christo," (For Christ) and the King is the Huguenot motto and seal. D'Aubigne, Guizot, and other well-known authors are the sources of the historical information.

By brevity and conciseness in the choice of phraseology, and compactness in the arrangement of forms and topics, the author has endeavored to compress within the limits of a convenient manual an amount of carefully selected grammatical facts which would otherwise fill a much larger volume. *Hawthorne, Nathaniel. Miss Lagerlöf grew up here, and gives some fine descriptions of scenery. The book was first published in Sweden in 1894.

The scene is among the foot-hills of California, on the sea-coast not far from San Francisco. The hero and heroine, Mr. Paul and Miss Judith, unknown to each other, simultaneously take possession of the same section of government land in the woods. The friendly contest as to which is the rightful owner is admirably described, and is an important and interesting part of the story. A black curtain in Mr. Paul's cottage, and guarded very watchfully by him, figures conspicuously, giving rise to sundry natural conjectures on the part of Miss Judith. Just what was behind it, and how closely connected with Miss Judith it was, and much more, including a charming love-story -all this is contained in Mrs. Loughead's volume.

[3325 The misery that lurks under silk and jewels, and the heavy hearts that attend exhibitions, operas, galleries and festivities in fashionable New York society, are uncovered in this story of modern married life of wholly unsympathetic natures. Creeds without heart, holiness without charity, are held responsible for the hollowness of society. The value of the letter learned in the right spirit is brought home to many a typical case of the society evils that lie about all thinking people. One of the heroines is musically gifted in a rare degree.

An historical tale of the days of Montrose, in which Alexander Gordon, the great Scottish Covenanter, is one of the most important characters. John Splendid is supposed to have been a poor cousin of the great marquis who had gone through two fortunes in black cattle, fought valiantly here and there, and at the time the story opens was manager of some Scottish silver mines. He traced almost all the disasters that fell upon the Scotch to the introduction of book-learning. The events of the Covenanting days are once more told by a new writer of spirit and learning. This fragment is all that survives of a novel written by Petronius, the elegantiarum arbiter of the Emperor Nero, whom readers of to-day learned to know chiefly through "Quo vadis." Trimalchio is a rich, vulgar freedman, living under the Empire. He gives a dinner which includes men and women of all ranks of life. The details of the dinner are given in full, with the conversations of the guests.
