The story of Roy and Elsie, three and two years old, two little New England children. Frederic, Harold.

Gloria mundi: a novel. Chic., H. S. Stone & Co., 1898. D. cl., $1.50.

C.

4+58 p. [3738

The story of a young man, brought up on the Continent in obscurity, who finds himself all at once, through the tragical deaths of several of his relatives, the heir to a dukedom. The story opens with his jour ney to England, and the incident of his meeting a young English typewriter, who has been to Paris on her vacation. This girl divides with his cousin, Lady Cressage, the interest of the story. In describing the family of Torr, to which the young hero belongs, a graphic picture is presented of degeneracy in a noble family, almost extinct, through its vices and immoralities. The hero, when he takes his place among them as the Duke of Glastonbury, is homesick for his old simple life.

[3766 The three years bridging the time from the Crimean to the Italian War of 1859 form the epochs treated in this volume. The author follows the course of public events in a brilliant chronicle of the treaty of Paris, the baptism of the Prince Imperial, the coronation of the Czar Alexander II., the attempted assassination by Orsini and his fellow-conspirators of the Emperor Napoleon, and the diplomatic meetings which prepared the way for the war for Italian liberation. The secret history of this movement contemplated by Napoleon as soon as the Crimean War had closed, and pursued by him with equal skill and success, is also strikingly unfolded.

Robert Dare, the hero, is represented as a type of the manhood of the "New south." The heroine is a daughter of the north, a Quakeress, who was sent to the Carolinas to recuperate. These two, with Miss Rachel Dare, a quaint southern lady, Amos Thorne, a staid Quaker, and last but not least Aunt Judy, a believer in many negro superstitions, figure in an oldfashioned love-story.
