An Act to amend "The Mercantile Law Amendment Act, 1861."

[Assented to, 22nd October, 1878.]

WHEREAS by "The Mercantile Law Amendment Act, 1861," Preamble. it is enacted that "no acceptance of any Bill of Exchange, whether inland or foreign, made after the thirty-first day of December, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one shall be sufficient to bind or charge any person, unless the same be in writing on such Bill, or, if there be more than one part of such Bill on one of the said parts, and signed by the acceptor or some person duly authorised by him ;" and whereas doubts have arisen as to the true effect and intention of the said Act, and as to whether the signature of the drawee alone can constitute a sufficient acceptance, so as to satisfy the requirements thereof-Be it therefore Enacted by the Governor of the Province of South Australia, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and House of Assembly of the said province, in this present Parliament assembled, as follows:

An Act to amend "The Patent Act, 1877."

[Assented to, 22nd October, 1878.]

WHEREAS it is expedient to amend "The Patent Act, 1877" Preamble. -Be it therefore Enacted by the Governor of the Province of South Australia, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and House of Assembly, in this present Parliament assembled, as follows:

1. From and after the passing of this Act the sections of "The Patent Act, 1877," hereinafter mentioned shall be altered and amended as follows

Section 4 shall be read and have effect as if the words "Depart- Amendment of certain ment of the Attorney-General" were therein inserted in the sections of "The first and second lines thereof, in lieu of the words "Department of the Chief Secretary.'

Section 6 shall be read and have effect as if the words "The
Secretary to the Attorney-General" were therein inserted
in the first line thereof, in lieu of the words "The Under
Secretary."

Section 25 shall be read and have effect as if the words "Five
Pounds Five Shillings" were therein inserted in the seventh
line thereof, in lieu of the words "Ten Pounds."

2. This Act and "The Patent Act, 1877," except in so far as Incorporation. the same is altered by this Act, shall be incorporated, and read and construed together accordingly.

An Act for the Protection and Preservation of Fish.

[Assented to, 22nd October, 1878.]

HEREAS it is necessary that means should be adopted to Preamble. prevent as well the wanton destruction and waste of fish in the waters of the Province of South Australia occasioned by the improper use of nets and other devices employed in catching and taking the same, and of explosive and other noxious substances, as the protection thereof in certain places and during certain seasonsBe it therefore Enacted by the Governor of the Province of South Australia, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and House of Assembly, in this present Parliament assembled, as follows:

1. The following words and expressions in this Act shall have Interpretation. the several meanings hereby assigned to them, unless there be something in the subject or context repugnant to or inconsistent with such construction

1. The word "take" shall mean and include "catch" or "dredge "Take." for" or "raise":
