INTRODUCTION. IN giving this list of Naturalists to the public, the editor desires to extend his thanks not only to the many who have aided him by the transmission of new names, but to all who have in any way given their encouragement and support. Much of the completeness which the work may possess is due to the efficient aid of Miss S. E. Brooks; without whose faithful and untiring efforts, in preparing the manuscript and guiding the work through the press, it must have contained many more inaccuracies than now. Acknowledgments are also due Prof. Daniel C. Eaton, of Yale College, Prof. G. Brown Goode, of the Smithsonian Institution, Prof. R. H. Ward, editor of the microscopical department of the "American Naturalist," Messrs. J. S. Kingsley and Caleb Cooke, of the Peabody Academy of Science, and Mr. G. A. Bates, and Dr. Henry Wheatland of the Essex Institute. As in the first edition of the work, the list of Chemists and Physicists is furnished by Prof. H. Carrington Bolton, of Trinity College, Hartford, Conn. The list of societies is less complete than could be desired, but it is intended to work up this department so that in future editions it may be made complete.
