FOREWORD

HE aim of this work is to place in condensed

form, at the disposal of the school, suggestions for effectively teaching school literature.

To that end, selections have been widely drawn, and an endeavor has been made to show the work in a proper prospective. It is hoped that the study of the extracts will so lead to the development of the pupil's taste, that the volumes of the school library will more and more come to their true function in the progress of education.
