insured only by their ignorance regarding these subjects, while many other good people recognize in the young intrinsic qualities of morality and ambition that will lead them to choose the right if they can determine which it is. We belong to the latter class, and believe that the young will be inestimably benefited by the Truth, especially when it is presented in a way that fully convinces them that it is truth.

If those who believe that ignorance is the only safeguard to virtue, could insure the ignorance, there would be some grounds for such belief. But this is impossible; and what the young learn from each other, and from servants and other unreliable sources, is more error than truth. And it is the errors that do the injury. With these facts and much more convincing evidence, strongly impressed upon our mind, we decided to add our efforts in an honest endeavor to disseminate truth, and Plain Talk is the result.

The earlier chapters were written with a view of reaching and convincing the younger minds, while the later chapters were written more for minds of greater maturity. That all may be received in the spirit in which they were written, and add to the success and happiness of all young readers, is the earnest wish of the writer. V. P. E.
